People always think about the relationship between money and happiness. We may think we can use money to buy happiness. It’s not true. But you can spend money increasing it. A happiness shopping list might go like this. Buy better relationships Sometimes the key to happiness is how you deal with your relationships with others. Use money to attend a college party or a friend’s wedding (婚礼). This is especially important to younger adults as they need to attend a social life. Young adults often experience a period of searching for life partners and more social circles. Buy experiences The usual advice is “buy experiences, not things”. A bicycle can provide an experience, and a new camera can keep one. So buy experiences, especially with other people, but also think about buying things that allow you to have experiences or keep good memories. Buy for your interests Someone who mostly eats out should not spend much money buying an expensive set of kitchen knives. What about someone that loves to cook? Maybe he can bring himself happiness in this way. It reminds us that beautiful tools make work a joy. If you are interested in something, you can spend more on it. Buy self-discipline (自律) Do you want to improve your health or diet but have trouble doing it? That might mean choosing a cheap gym, and it’s more convenient to you, or even you could hire a personal trainer. At the supermarket, it could mean buying healthy food that is more convenient. Sometimes, you can spend some money joining a sports club or buying some home sports machines. ()26. What does the writer think about the relationship between money and happiness? A. Money has nothing to do with happiness.

B. We will make more money if our life is filled with happiness. C. Only money can bring happiness to us.

In my school days, I was a shy boy and liked to hang out only with my group of friends. I never thought of taking part in any public activities, so acting was an impossible career choice then.

I still remember that evening so clearly. It was the last day of school and I was with my friends at our school party. A personality contest was going on, in which my classmates were performing, showing off their talents in order to win the title (Mr or Miss School). From the sidelines I was watching them making their wonderful performances on the stage.

Suddenly, I heard my name being called out. I was shocked. Full of fear, I walked up to the front of the stage, not sure of what I was going to do next. My teacher knew I was nervous and smiled at me, gesturing that I must go. I don’t remember what I did up there as it was all a haze (迷糊) in my mind then, but I went on to win the title that year! I later found out that it was my teacher herself who had registered (报名) me for the contest in order to help me overcome my stage fear. It’s 11:00 p.m., and I’m still sitting here writing this article for the school magazine! I’ve had two weeks to write it, and my teacher, Julia, wants it tomorrow. She’s always complaining that I leave things till the last minute. Maybe she’s right.

A month ago I made a decision to be more efficient this year. Well, I’ve clearly failed. I’ve also been trying to get fitter by taking exercise for four weeks now. I’ve started going to the health club. I’ve even been going to bed earlier. But Tm not feeling any fitter, just a little unhappier. I miss my bad habits. Why is leading a better life so hard?

I’ve just read an article on a website, and I’ve discovered that it’s our brain’s fault. It’s programmed to make it difficult to get rid of bad habits. Scientists have done experiments that show we use one part of our brain when we think about ourselves and another when we think about other people. However, when we think about ourselves in the future, we use the same part of the brain that we usually use to think about other people. In other words, the brain sees the “fixture you” as a different person more than your “present you.” That’s why we don’t always find it easy to make good decisions for ourselves in the fixture.

In addition, scientists have discovered that it takes around ten weeks to form a good habit. Ten weeks is a really long time,so it’s easy to give up what you want to do before then. So even when we want to change our ways and become better people, our brains won’t let us do it. Or is this just an excuse? Look—I’ve finished my article on time! Anything is possible. ()38. What may Julia think of the writer according to the first paragraph? A. Very smart. B. Hard-working. C. A bit lazy. D. Honest.

()39. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us? A. How our brain sees ourselves in the future. B. Why it’s difficult for us to change others. C. How our brain helps us change our habits.

D. Why it’s difficult for us to make good decisions about the future.

()40. The writer needs another ___________ to form the habit of taking exercise according to the scientists.

A. two weeks B. four weeks C. six weeks D. ten weeks

()41. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. We can change our habits.

B. It’s impossible to change our habits.

C. Our brain plays a main role in changing our habits. D. All of us like to find excuses for our bad habits. E

We all know some great people in our lives. So what makes them so great? Dr Kimbro, writer of the book What Makes the Great Greats, believes that being great depends on a promise of making dreams come true. He writes in his book, “All high achievers make choices, not excuses. “We all have a million excuses for why something failed, but only some go on to achieve their goals in life.

Here are some other important things that make great people great.

If you wish to achieve greatness, you should work hard. As Margaret Thatcher once said, “I do not

know anyone that has got to the top without hard work. That is the recipe(秘诀)It will not always get you to the top, but should get you pretty near,”

Practice and you shall get there. We learn things like walking, dancing, or even brushing our teeth by practicing. We do these things again and again until we become good at them. Great people practice more.

Your critics (批评者)make you do better. Every great person has his or her critics. “Criticism may not be pleasant, but it is necessary. It has the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things,”Winston Churchill once said.

All great people have one thing in common. They have all been selfless (无私的)in their service to others. That is their purpose all along: to serve others, and to help them overcome difficulties. As Martin Luther King said, “Not everybody can be famous, but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.”

When the time comes, be ready to lead, That is what separates the weak from the strong. Great people are not just about talking. They actually jump in when the need appears. ()42. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean? A. All high achievers choose bigger goals.

B. All high achievers find excuses for their behaviors. C. All high achievers choose to believe themselves. D. All high achievers choose to follow their dreams.

()43. What does the writer want to show by mentioning Margaret Thatcher’s words? A. Hard work is very important. B. Not everyone will get to the top. C. We should set small goals in life.

D. Almost everyone around her worked hard.

()44. What did Winston Churchill think of criticism? A. Harmful. B. Important. C. Pleasant. D. Terrible.

()45. What does the writer think separates the weak from the strong? A. Accepting criticism. B. Being critics to others. C. Holding on to promises.

D. Leading others when the time comes. 第二卷非选择题(25分) IV.语法填空(10分)
