Just as I entered my house, I heard a sound coming from the bedroom upstairs — it was from my favourite violin.

“Thief!”

I rushed upstairs and saw a boy in dirty clothes pulling my violin down. At first sight, I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed he was surely a thief.

However, when I saw his eyes full of fear, my anger disappeared. I smiled and asked, “Are you Mr. Ram’s student Rubens? I’m his butler(男管家). I’ve heard Mr. Ram said his student would come. It must be you.”

“Has my teacher gone out?” the boy said, “I think I’d better visit him again in a while.” I nodded and asked him, “Do you like playing the violin?” “Yes, but I’m too poor to afford one.” the boy replied.

“Then, I’ll give you this violin.” The boy looked at me in surprise, but he picked up the violin. While going out of the room, he suddenly saw a huge photo of me playing the violin at the Grand Theatre of Sydney on the wall. His face turned pale. He stood there for a moment and ran out. He must have understood what had happened because no master would put up the butler’s photo on the wall of his living room.

A few years later, at a music competition in Melbourne, I was invited to be the judge. Finally, a violin player called Merritt won the first prize.

After the prize-giving, Merritt ran to me holding a violin box, his face red, and asked, “Mr. Brian, do you still know me? You gave me this violin, which I have treasured ever since! Today, I want to say sorry and give back the violin to you without regret…”

He was just the “Mr. Ram’s student”! 43. The writer felt when he saw the boy pulling his violin down. A. angry B. afraid C. sad D. disappointed 44. In fact, who was the boy in dirty clothes?

A. The butler’s friend B. A thief in the writer’s home C. Mr. Ram’s student D. A visitor to the Ram family 45. The boy’s face turned pale probably because he realized .

A. the butler was just the master B. the master had come back home C. the butler was a great musician D. he would be discovered as a thief soon 46. The passage mainly wants to tell us that . A. it is never late to say sorry B. the future is what we make it C. kindness can be better than anger D. success depends on support

C

Do you dream of the day when you can drive a car? In the United States, teenagers can get their driver’s license when they are only 16 years old, but it feels like forever until that day comes. Trust me, because I’ve been there.

Getting a driver’s license takes a lot of time and energy, but it’s worth it because it means having a lot more freedom. I’m from the rural state of Iowa (爱荷华州) that doesn’t have a lot of public transportation, and everything is really spread out. So until I turned 16, my parents had to drive me pretty much everywhere.

There were several steps before I got that special plastic card. In Iowa, everyone can get their learner’s permit at the age of 14, which means you can only drive if your parent is sitting in the seat next to you.

The next step was getting my school permit at the age of 15. In the state of Iowa, if you live more than a mile (1.6 km) away from school you can get a school permit. But you can only drive to school and back home. Luckily, I lived just over a mile away from school, so I was able to drive my mom’s car to school. But if you were caught going outside that route (路线) you would get in big trouble.

初三英语Finally, after taking and passing a three-month-long driver’s education course and the final test, I was able to get my driver’s license. I could almost taste the freedom already, and it did make life quite a bit easier. 47. What does the writer think of getting a driver’s license at the age of 16?

A. It’s useless to have a driver’s license at that age. B. It gives her freedom to do everything she wants.

C. It helps a lot in her daily life to have a driver’s license. D. It’s not worth so much energy to have a driver’s license. 48. If a girl has a learner’s permit in Iowa, she . a. must be at or over the age of 14 b. must be at or over the age of 16 c. can drive everywhere in the US d. can drive when there is a parent sitting beside her A. a c B. b c C. b d D. a d 49. If you live 1 mile away and have got a school permit in Iowa, .

A. you can only drive your parent’s car B. you can only drive a mile every school day C. you can only drive inside your school D. you can only drive to school and back home 50. From the last paragraph, we know that .

A. every 16-year-old can easily get a driver’s license

B. you don’t need to take the course if you can pass the test C. the driver’s education course and the test take three months D. you can get a driver’s license after taking a three-month course

D

What should you do if you experience campus bullying (欺凌) or violence? The book The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen is suitable for you to read. It not only shows you how serious bullying is, but also teaches you how to get through it.

This book is written by Canadian author Susin Nielsen. It is about 13-year-old Henry K. Larsen. He lives an ordinary but happy life. However, everything changed when his elder brother Jesse killed Scott, a boy who always bullied Jesse. Then Jesse killed himself. Henry’s family had to start their lives in a new city. There, no one knew about their past.

I like this book because it touches me so much. I couldn’t stop thinking deeply about my life and what I would do if I were Henry. Moreover, I find that this book has so many similarities with my life.

My favorite part in the book is when Henry woke up after he had a head injury in the hospital. He received cards from his parents, neighbors and friends. I am so glad that so many people loved Henry. I am also surprised that friendship allowed Henry to open his heart and tell his new friend about what happened to his brother. Maybe Henry hated his brother at first. But after he had made new friends in a new place, he could finally forgive him and himself. Henry’s changes through the story touched me. He was able to face reality and start his new life.

51. According to the second paragraph, which of the following is NOT true about the book?

A. Henry K. Larsen is a 13-year-old boy. B. Jesse is Henry K. Larsen’s elder brother.

C. Jesse is killed by Scott because of campus bullying. D. Henry’s family moves to a new city after the accident. 52. What does the writer of the article think of the book?

A. Teenagers can learn how to get through bullying. B. Henry’s story reminds readers of serious bullying.

C. The bullying scenes described make readers scared. D. It has many similarities with another book she read. 53. According to the last paragraph, we know that . A. no neighbors went to hospital to see Henry B. Henry finally opened his heart to his friends C. Henry couldn’t forgive his brother or himself D. Henry kept Jesse’s experience a secret forever 54. Hi, I’m Lucy. My parents are very strict with me, and they have made some basic rules I must obey. Firstly, I must finish my homework on time. Secondly, I can’t play computer games, even in my free time or on weekends. Thirdly, I have to do some chores, such as making the bed and tidying my bedroom and so on. Fourthly, I can’t go to bed too late. If I break one of them, I will be punished. But thanks to these rules, I can live a healthy and regular life.
