HAROLD BELL SCHOLARSHIPS
The Harold Bell Scholarship Trust offers scholarships to full-time teachers of English from Japan. The purpose of the scholarships is to enable teachers of English at Japanese universities, colleges and high schools to improve their ability to use the English language, and to gain a deeper knowledge at first hand of the British way of life, so that their competence as teachers may be improved. The scholarships enable scholars to undertake language and methodology courses at a Bell School in the UK, or at another British school approved by the Trustees.
Harold Cyril Spencer Bell, in whose memory these scholarships were established, was a chartered accountant who went out to the Far East in 19 in the employ of Messrs. Butterfield & Swire, a leading British shipping company. Later he started his own firm of chartered accountants with offices in Tokyo, Yokahama and Kobe, where he inspired great devotion from his staff. His understanding of the Japanese people and his unfailing sense of humour won him their respect and many life-long friends, both in Japan and later in London, where he served for 25 years on the Council of the Japan Society. He was always an enthusiastic worker for the establishment of good relations between the British and Japanese communities. Thus, these scholarships, which are awarded by an independent scholarship trust, are a particularly fitting memorial to his name.
Selection criteria
1. Only one or two Harold Bell scholarships will be awarded in each calendar year.
2. Only men and women who have already successfully completed university degree
courses in English and have qualified as teachers of English are eligible. Preference is given to candidates who have taught English at a Japanese high school, university or college for at least one year (full time, or equivalent part-time), and who are under 30 years of age.
3. Preference will be given to candidates who have not had the opportunity to visit or
study in an English-speaking country and who are unlikely to be able to afford to do so.
4. Candidates will be asked to complete an application form and a 200-word statement
about how the scholarship will assist them in their professional development.
5. The British Council, Tokyo will assist with the short-listing of candidates, and short-listed candidates may be interviewed in English. The final decision on the selection of scholars will be made by the trustees of the Harold Bell Scholarship Trust in consultation with Bell International.
