inputwhichisgenerallyachievedwiththeuseofanRFbalun.TheEVMcanbeconfiguredwithadifferentbaluntofacilitateoperationinthedesiredband.InspecttheboardatR101,R102,andR103todeterminewhichbalunispopulatedontheboard.

TheRFcablesshouldbegoodqualityRFcablesduetothehighfrequencysignals.

•MeasuretheinsertionlossoftheRFinputcableandusethisvaluetocompensateforthedesiredinputpower.Note,thereisapproximately1dBofinsertionlossfortheinputtracesandbalunonthePCBboard.

•MeasuretheinsertionlossoftheLOinputcableandusethisvaluetocompensateforthedesiredLOpower.Note,thereisapproximately1dBofinsertionlossfortheinputtracesandbalunonthePCBboard.

•BBLossfactor:Ifusingtheon-boardtransformerstointerfacewith50-Ωtestequipment,thenthereisapproximately12.3dBoflossassociatedwiththevoltagetransformation.

4BasicTestProcedure

ThissectionoutlinesthebasictestprocedurefortestingtheEVM.Thissectionisdividedintothreetestsections:DCandProgrammability,BasicCWRF,andAdvancedRFTesting.Thefirstsectionrequiresonlypowersupplywithcurrentreadoutandacomputerforprogrammability.ThesecondsectionrequiresbasicRFtestequipmentandbasictechnicalknow-how.Thethirdsectionisforreferenceandrequiresspecializedequipmentandset-up.Onlysectionsoneandtwoarerequiredtoensurebasicfunctionality.

4.1InitialInspection

DeterminewhichbalundeviceisplacedontheboardbyinspectingwhichjumperresistorisinstalledattheR101,R102,andR103locations.ThisinformationdeterminestheproperRFfrequenciesforwhichtheboardisset.

ToggleAutoCalEnontheGUI.VerifythatnoRFsignalinpresent.

MonitorthedcvoltageareTP2(IA)andTP7(IB)andbetweenTP10(QA)andTP12(QB)andverifythatthedcoffsetvoltageis0±15mV.

InjectRFsignalatJ6atF_RF+300kHzat–40dBm.Compensateforcablelossincludingabout1dBforinputtransmissionlinelossesandbalun.ConnectSpectrumAnalyzeratJ3(I).

SetSpectrumanalyzercenterfrequencyto300kHz;setspanto500kHz;setreferencelevelto0dBm;setanalyzertodccoupling.

Measuresignalat300kHzandverifysignalat–9.3dBm±2dB.Note,thereisnocompensationfortransformerloss.

AdjustBBGainto20;verifysignalreduces4dB±1dB.

SwitchoutputcabletoJ10(Q)andrepeattheprocedureabove.

4.4AdvancedRFTest

TheEVMisequippedwiththedifferentialoutputsgoingtoa16:1transformerforinterfacingwith50-Ωtestequipment.ThisconfigurationissuitableforcompletingbasicRFtestevaluationofthedevice;however,theinherenthighpassnatureofatransformerwilllimitperformanceatfrequenciesclosetodc.Asa

result,thisconfigurationisnotsuitableforanalyzingtruemodulatedsignals.Asanalternative,theportsatJ2,J4,J8,J13offerdirectaccesstothedriverampoutputsforthedifferentialIandQsignalsrespectively.Note,theseportscannotdrive50-Ωtestequipmentdirectly.Forbestperformance,theconnectionstothetransformershouldbeseveredbyremovingcapacitorsC5,C8,C33,C35.

TheseportscandriveintoanADCdirectlyorintoahighimpedancedifferentialamplifier.TheseportsaredccoupledtoprovidethepropercommonmodeoffsetvoltagetotheADC.ThetypicalEVMperformanceofthedeviceusingamodulated3.5MHzwideWiMAXsignalcapturedbytheADCisshowninFigure4.6TRF3710EVM

ThemixeroutputscanbefeddirectlytothetransformersandtoportsJ5andJ9.ThiscanbeusefulformeasuringtheRFperformanceofthemixeritselfwithoutthePGAsorfilters.ThisfeatureisimplementedbytogglingthePWD_Buf1toON.

5.2CommonModeVoltage

Thecommonmodevoltageissettoastatic1.5Vbyaresistordividernetwork.Note,thecommonmodevoltageareshiftediftheinputsupplyisnot5V.Alternatively,thisiscontrolledviaaresistivepotby:•RemovingR11,R12,R17,R18.

•Placing0Ωjumperat:R10andR20.•AdjustingpotsatR13andR19.

WhencascadingthedevicewithanADCitmaybedesirabletofeedthecommonmodevoltagefromtheADCtothedevice.Thiscanbeaccomplishedby:•RemovingshuntatW1andW3.

•PlacingADCcommonmodevoltageatTP8andTP9.

5.3DCOffsetControl

TheeasiestwaytomanagethedcoffsetcontrolistousetheAutoCalfunction.ThisisaccomplishedbyselectingAutoCaltoAutoandtogglingtheAutoCalEnswitch.MonitorthedcoffsetvoltageatTP2(IA)andTP7(IB)andbetweenTP10(QA)andTP12(QB)andverifythattheprocedureworkedsufficiently.TheusermayalsoselectReadbacktoOnandReadbackEntoOnandfindthevaluesoftheIandQDACregistersontheGUI.

IftheRFinputsignalisdisengagedduringtheauto-calprocedure,thenthedetectionfilterbandwidthcanremainat10MHzandtheclockdividercanremainat1.Theclockdividercanbechangedto256toprovidesufficientaveragingforthedetectortoyieldsuperiorresults.IftheRFinputsignalisapplied,reducethedetectionfilterbandwidthto1kHzandincreasetheclockdividerto1024toincreasethedetectoraveraging.

Alternatively,thisfunctioncanbeaccomplishedbymanuallyprogrammingtheIandQDACregisters.ToggleAutoCaltoManual.AdjusttheIandQDACregistersontheGUIdirectly.MonitorthedcoffsetvaluesatTP2(IA)andTP7(IB)andbetweenTP10(QA)andTP12(QB)untilthedcoffsetisascloseto0mVaspossible.

Athirdoptionistoadjustthecommonmodethroughananalogvoltage.TheEVMisequippedwithtwopotsatR6andR24thatcontrolthisvoltage.OntheGUI,changetheDCOffsetCaltoAnalogandadjustthepotsatR6andR24whilemonitoringtestpointsatTP2,TP7,TP10,TP12togetdcoffsetnear0mV.

5.4AnalogGainControl

ThedeviceisequippedwiththreebitstocontrolthePGAgaintofacilitateananaloggaincontrolloopthatdoesnotrequiretheuseofSPI.Tousethisfunction,settheBBGainontheGUIto17.Thenadjustforthelast7statesthroughthebinarycombinationofbitsB0,B1,B2thatcanbetoggledatDIPswitchSW1.
