4BasicTestProcedure
ThissectionoutlinesthebasictestprocedurefortestingtheEVM.Thissectionisdividedintothreetestsections:DCandProgrammability,BasicCWRF,andAdvancedRFTesting.Thefirstsectionrequiresonlypowersupplywithcurrentreadoutandacomputerforprogrammability.ThesecondsectionrequiresbasicRFtestequipmentandbasictechnicalknow-how.Thethirdsectionisforreferenceandrequiresspecializedequipmentandset-up.Onlysectionsoneandtwoarerequiredtoensurebasicfunctionality.
4.1InitialInspection
DeterminewhichbalundeviceisplacedontheboardbyinspectingwhichjumperresistorisinstalledattheR101,R102,andR103locations.ThisinformationdeterminestheproperRFfrequenciesforwhichtheboardisset.

4.4AdvancedRFTest
TheEVMisequippedwiththedifferentialoutputsgoingtoa16:1transformerforinterfacingwith50-Ωtestequipment.ThisconfigurationissuitableforcompletingbasicRFtestevaluationofthedevice;however,theinherenthighpassnatureofatransformerwilllimitperformanceatfrequenciesclosetodc.Asa
result,thisconfigurationisnotsuitableforanalyzingtruemodulatedsignals.Asanalternative,theportsatJ2,J4,J8,J13offerdirectaccesstothedriverampoutputsforthedifferentialIandQsignalsrespectively.Note,theseportscannotdrive50-Ωtestequipmentdirectly.Forbestperformance,theconnectionstothetransformershouldbeseveredbyremovingcapacitorsC5,C8,C33,C35.
TheseportscandriveintoanADCdirectlyorintoahighimpedancedifferentialamplifier.TheseportsaredccoupledtoprovidethepropercommonmodeoffsetvoltagetotheADC.ThetypicalEVMperformanceofthedeviceusingamodulated3.5MHzwideWiMAXsignalcapturedbytheADCisshowninFigure4.6TRF3710EVM

5.3DCOffsetControl
TheeasiestwaytomanagethedcoffsetcontrolistousetheAutoCalfunction.ThisisaccomplishedbyselectingAutoCaltoAutoandtogglingtheAutoCalEnswitch.MonitorthedcoffsetvoltageatTP2(IA)andTP7(IB)andbetweenTP10(QA)andTP12(QB)andverifythattheprocedureworkedsufficiently.TheusermayalsoselectReadbacktoOnandReadbackEntoOnandfindthevaluesoftheIandQDACregistersontheGUI.
IftheRFinputsignalisdisengagedduringtheauto-calprocedure,thenthedetectionfilterbandwidthcanremainat10MHzandtheclockdividercanremainat1.Theclockdividercanbechangedto256toprovidesufficientaveragingforthedetectortoyieldsuperiorresults.IftheRFinputsignalisapplied,reducethedetectionfilterbandwidthto1kHzandincreasetheclockdividerto1024toincreasethedetectoraveraging.
Alternatively,thisfunctioncanbeaccomplishedbymanuallyprogrammingtheIandQDACregisters.ToggleAutoCaltoManual.AdjusttheIandQDACregistersontheGUIdirectly.MonitorthedcoffsetvaluesatTP2(IA)andTP7(IB)andbetweenTP10(QA)andTP12(QB)untilthedcoffsetisascloseto0mVaspossible.
Athirdoptionistoadjustthecommonmodethroughananalogvoltage.TheEVMisequippedwithtwopotsatR6andR24thatcontrolthisvoltage.OntheGUI,changetheDCOffsetCaltoAnalogandadjustthepotsatR6andR24whilemonitoringtestpointsatTP2,TP7,TP10,TP12togetdcoffsetnear0mV.

ThedeviceisequippedwiththreebitstocontrolthePGAgaintofacilitateananaloggaincontrolloopthatdoesnotrequiretheuseofSPI.Tousethisfunction,settheBBGainontheGUIto17.Thenadjustforthelast7statesthroughthebinarycombinationofbitsB0,B1,B2thatcanbetoggledatDIPswitchSW1.
