The Most Important Festival in China

Hi, my name is Xiaoming and I'm going to tell you all about the biggest and most exciting festival we celebrate in China every year - the Spring Festival! It's also called Chinese New Year and it happens sometime between late January and mid February, depending on the lunar calendar.

The Spring Festival is a really big deal for Chinese families like mine. It's a time when we get to take a break from school and work, eat lots of delicious foods, get together with our relatives, and celebrate with awesome traditions! I always look forward to it because it's just so much fun.

One of the coolest things is that we get a whole week off from school for the New Year! My parents also take time off work so we can travel to visit our grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Having the whole family together is the best part. We kids get to stay up late, play games, watch TV shows and just have a blast with our cousins.

Before the New Year arrives, my mom is super busy cleaning the whole house from top to bottom. She says it's to sweep away any bad luck from the old year. Then she'll decorate with lots of red paper lanterns, couplets with good luck sayings, and window decorations shaped like the animal zodiac for that year. We always get new clothes to wear too.

My favorite part is definitely the New Year's Eve dinner! We have a huge feast with so many amazing dishes like dumplings, fish, noodles, spring rolls and sweet desserts. It's a tradition to eat dumplings because they look like ancient money and are supposed to bring wealth in the new year. The fish symbolizes having more than you need. And long noodles represent a long life!

After our big meal, the real fun begins! My cousins and I get to stay up waaay past our bedtimes and set off fire crackers and fireworks when the new year arrives at midnight. The whole neighborhood is super loud with fireworks and the dragons dancing in the streets. It's honestly the most exciting, adrenaline-pumping celebration I've ever experienced!

The next morning, we get up early to honor our ancestors and elders with special rituals. The kids like me get super excited

because it's time to collect our red envelope gifts filled with lucky money from our parents and grandparents. Yay, free cash! For the next couple weeks, there are festivals, temple fairs, performances and all kinds of fun activities happening in the cities and villages across China. People hang up red lanterns, see dragon and lion dances in the streets, watch fireworks displays, and eat lots of sticky rice balls and other special New Year foods. My Favorite Holiday - Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is my favorite holiday ever! It's the biggest and most important celebration for Chinese people all around the world. We get to eat lots of yummy food, get red envelopes with money inside, watch amazing fireworks, and have fun with our family and friends. It's the best time of the year!

Every Chinese New Year's Eve, my whole family gets together at my grandparents' house for a huge feast. My grandma spends days cooking all of our traditional dishes like dumplings, nian gao (those really sticky sweet rice cakes), and a big fish for luck and abundance. We also have to clean the whole house really well before New Year's because it's bad luck to start the new year with a messy home.

My favorite part is getting the red envelopes with money! The red color symbolizes good luck and every kid gets red envelopes filled with cash from our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. The bigger kids like me usually get more money than the little kids. I plan to save up my red envelope money this year to buy that cool new video game I want.

On Chinese New Year's Eve night, we all get dressed up in our nicest clothes, usually bright red for luck. Right at midnight, we open all the doors and windows to let the old year out and the new year in. Then we light firecrackers and watch fireworks bursting in the sky to scare away any evil spirits and bad luck. It's always so loud and bright and exciting!

After the fireworks, it's tradition to stay up really late into the night. My cousins and I run around playing games while the

adults gamble and drink tea. I always crash pretty early though and have to get carried up to bed.

The next two weeks are my favorite part of Chinese New Year - there's no school and we just get to play and eat and be lazy! We visit different relatives every day and they always give us more red envelopes and delicious food like nian gao, sesame seed balls, coconut candies, and those yummy sticky rice balls. My family always goes to the Flower Market during the New Year too. It's this huge outdoor market filled with beautiful flowers, plants, toys, decorations, and snacks. I love looking at all the cool Chinese knick-knacks and eating tasty street food. Another fun tradition is watching the Chinese New Year TV specials. There are always big variety shows with singing, dancing, comedy acts, and amazing acrobats. My little brother and I especially love the magic acts and circus performers. Sometimes fictional characters like the Monkey King make appearances too!

At the end of the 15-day celebration, we have the Lantern Festival where we go out at night to look at all the beautiful lanterns and eat tang yuan (those sticky rice balls in sweet soup). People put up lanterns everywhere in the streets, parks, and temples. Some of the lanterns are so big and intricate - shaped

like animals or famous landmarks. There are also lantern riddle games and contests.

Overall, Chinese New Year is just the most incredible, over-the-top party filled with family, friends, lucky symbols, amazing performances, and best of all - NO SCHOOL! I get so spoiled rotten every year and can't wait for the next Chinese New Year to come around again. It's hands down my favorite holiday ever!

Weeks before the new year, my mom starts cleaning our whole house from top to bottom. She wants to sweep away any bad luck from the old year and make a fresh start for the new year. My dad puts up red decorations with lucky symbols and sayings. Red is the luckiest color and is supposed to scare away evil spirits. He hangs up red lanterns, red scrolls with calligraphy, and red paper cut-outs of characters meaning good fortune, happiness, wealth and long life.

A few days before New Year's Eve, my grandparents come over and we have a huge family reunion dinner. My grandma
