It was an unexpected incident, which all started with a stop at a red light.

Mr. Salwen was driving his 14-year-old daughter, Hannah, back from a sleep over in 2006. While waiting at a traffic light, they saw a black Mercedes Coupe on one side and a homeless man begging for food on the other.

“Dad, if that man had a less nice car, that man there could have a meal.”Hannah protested. The light changed and they drove on,but Hannah was too young to be reasonable. She pestered (纠缠) her parents about inequity, insisting that she wanted to do something. \"What do you want to do?” her mom responded. \"Sell our house?”

It’ s unrealistic but Hannah seized upon the idea of selling their large house and donating half the money to charity(慈善), while using the other half to buy a more modest replacement home.

Finally, that’s what the family did. The project-crazy, lack of thought but completely inspiring – is written down in detail in a book by father and daughter scheduled to be published next month : “ The Power of Half.” It’s a book that, frankly, I’d be nervous about leaving around where my own teenage kids might find it. A child reads this, and the next thing you know your whole family is out on the street.

Indeed, helping those in need means a lot. In a column a week ago,it described neurological (神经学的)evidence from brain scans that unselfishness lights up parts of the brain normally associated with more primary satisfaction. The Salwens’ experience confirms the selfish pleasures of selflessness.

Mr. Salwen and his wife,Joan, had always assumed that their kids would be better off in a bigger house. But after they downsized, there was much less space to stay alone,so the family members spent more time around each other. A smaller house unexpectedly turned out to be a more family-friendly house.

24. What does the underlined word “inequity” most probably mean in Paragraph 3?

A. Personal attitude. B. Satisfaction. C. Unfairness. B. Satisfaction.

D. Reasonable Statement.

25. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The writer’s children asked him to sell their house.

B. Mercedes Coupe is only an ordinary car which is quite cheap. C. Unselfishness has nothing to do with people’s primary satisfaction.

D. Hannah asked her parents to do something charitable and they sold their house. 26. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. The Salwens regretted selling their house. B. Small houses bring people more happiness, C. The Salwens intend to buy another big house. D. The relationship of the family members is much closer. 27. The best title for the passage should be_______.

A. Something We Can Live Without B. Somewhat Crazy but Inspiring C. An Expected Satisfaction D. The Less, the Better

C

These days, the environment is a huge topic. It seems like we’re always being reminded to recycle, or to ride a bike instead of taking a taxi. However, it isn’t just garbage and vehicles that can cause damage to the environment.

According to a recent study by the University of California, published by the journal Science Advances, fertilizer in farm soils is a major contributor to smog(雾霾)in nearby cities. According to the research, agricultural soils make up of 25 to 41 percent of nitrogen oxide emissions(氮氧化物排放)in California. Nitrogen oxide, or NOx, is a major factor in smog formation.

Just like fertilized farmland, there are many other items that we wouldn’t expect to have a huge effect on the environment. Take clothes for example. Data published by the World Wildlife Foundation says that on average, every kilogram of cotton takes around 10,000 liters of water to produce. This means that it takes around 6,000-8,000 liters of water just to create a single pair of jeans, not to mention the carbon produced when they’re made in the factory and then transported to a store.

And even what we choose to eat could be bad for the planet. In a 2014 study carried out by Gidon Eshel, a professor at Bard College in New York, US,it was found that beef farming could be causing more damage to the environment than all of the planet’s cars combined. Eshel wrote that beef needs 28 times more land and 11 times more water to produce than pork or chicken.

So does this mean that we should all stop buying jeans and eating beep? That’s certainly not realistic, However,we can start with small actions, which will make a huge difference to our planet.

28. How do jeans affect the environment according to the text?

A. It takes hundreds of years for jeans to break down. B. The production of jeans consumes a large amount of water. C. The transportation of jeans contributes to 25% of air pollution. D. The storage of jeans costs more natural resources than other clothes. 29. What realistic suggestion will the writer give us?

A. Buy new jeans now and then. B. Eat less beef in our daily life.

C. Take a taxi to and from work sometimes. D. Punish the farmers who insist on using fertilizer. 30. What can we infer from the text?

A. Fertilizer is the No.1 contributor to smog all over the world, B. What we eat has a close relation with environmental protection. C. Raising chicken needs the same amount water as raising Pigs.

D. Compared with beef farming, cars are more harmful to the environment. 31. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text?

P: Paragraph

D

We frequently hear about “the good old days”, when Americans were better, happier, and more honest. But were they more honest?Maybe yes,a long time ago when life was very different from what it is today.

School children used to know the story of how Abraham Lincoln walked five miles to return a penny he’d overcharged a customer. It’s the kind of story we think of as myth. But in the case of Lincoln, the story is true.

Students in the last century usually didn’t read “fun” stories. They read stories that taught moral values. Such stories pointed out quite clearly that children who lied, cheated,or stole came to bad ends.

Parents may have further stressed those values. It’s difficult to know. We do know that children didn’t hear their parents talk of cheating the government on income taxes – there weren’t any.

A clue as to why Americans may have been more honest in the past lies in the Abe Lincoln story. Lincoln knew his customer. They both lived in a small town. Would a check-out person at a large supermarket return money to a customer? It’s less likely.

Is honesty going out of style?

The vast majority of Americans still believe that honesty is an important part of the American Character. For that reason, there are numerous watch-dog committees at all levels of society. Although signs of dishonesty in school, business, and government seem much more numerous in recent years than in the past, could it be that we are getting better at making such dishonesty known to the public? There is some evidence that dishonesty, may rise and fall. When times are hard, incidents of theft and cheating usually go up. And when times get better such incidents tend to go down.

Many educators feel that as students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities, they are less likely to cheat. Surprisingly, some efforts to prevent cheating may actually encourage cheating – a person may feel “they don’t trust me anyway,” and be tempted(诱惑)to “beat the system.” Distrust can be contagious(传染的). But,so can trust! 32. Why were Americans more honest in the past?

A. Children didn’t often chat with their parents. B. Children learnt more about moral values. C. People liked reading fun stones. D. People lived a happier life.

33. What does the writer imply by “Lincoln knew his customer”?

A. If people knew one another, they would more likely be honest. B. People in big cities were more honest than those in small towns. C. Lincoln wouldn’t return the money if at a large supermarket. D. Lincoln knew how to operate a store successfully and smoothly. 34. What is the best way to beat the cheating in school?

A. Students should be forbidden to read “fun” stories. B. Schools should start a campaign to stop one from cheating.

C. The government set up watch-dog committees at all levels of society. D. Schools should build up students’ confidence and have trust in them. 35. What is the main idea of the last but one paragraph?

A. Honesty is still in style in American character. B. Honesty has something to do with economy. C. Cheating exists in different areas in American life. D. People are more sensitive to cheating than before. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
