One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem inability to read.

In the library,I found my way into the \"Children's Room.\" I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. Without opening the book—Amos, the Beagle with a Plan ,1 borrowed it from the library for the summer.

Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together.

My mother's call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book.

I never told my mother about my “miraculous” experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later ,she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.

A. let him spend a meaningful summer B. encourage him to do more walking C. help cure him of his reading problem D. make him learn more about weapons 2. The book caught the author's eye because .

A. it reminded him of his own dog B. he found its title easy to understand C. it contained pretty pictures of animals D. he liked children's stories very much 3. Which one could be the best title of the passage?

A. Mum's Strict Order. B. My Passion forReading. C. Reunion with My Beagle. D. The Charm of a Book.

Islam's own love of the library was sparked when she was in the third grade. She lived near the main branch of the Queens Public Library in New York City, and she went there to research Henry Hudson, an English explorer, for a school project.

\"The librarian made me feel so special. She remembered my name, and my favorite thing was that she gave me book recommendations,\" she said.\" When I was graduating from college, I thought about how I was going to make a difference in the world. Masks that helped save lives during the Covid-19 pandemic(疫情)are proving a deadly risk for wildlife, with birds and sea creatures trapped in many facial coverings in animal habitats.

Single-use masks have been found on the ground, waterways and beaches worldwide since countries required(heir use in public places to slow the pandemic's spread. Worn once, the thin protective materials can take hundreds of years to break down. \"Face masks aren't going away any time soon-but when we throw them away, these items can harm the environment and the animals who share our planet,\" Ashley from anima! rights group PETA said.

Monkeys have been found playing with used masks in the hills outsideMalaysia's capitalKuala Lumpur. And in an incident inBritain, a seagull was saved inChelmsfordafter its legs got caught in an abandoned mask for a week.

However, the biggest influence is in the water. More than 1.5 billion masks made their way into the world's oceans last year, accounting for around 6200 extra tons of ocean plastic pollution, according to environmental group OceansAsia. “Masks and gloves are particularlyproblematicfor sea creatures,\" says George Leonard, chief scientist from NGO. \"When those plastics break down in the environment, they form smaller and smaller particles(颗粒).Those particles then enter the food chain and influence the entire ecosystem,“ he added.

Campaigners have urged people to deal with masks properly after using them. OceansAsia has also called on governments to increase punishment for littering and encourage the use of washable masks. 8. What bring(s)a great danger to wildlife now? A. Waste masks. B. Covid-19.

C. Polluted water. D. Damaged habitats.

9. What does the underlined word “problematic”in paragraph 4 mean? A. Important. B. Attractive. C. Common. D. Troubling. 10. What can we infer from the text?

A. Monkeys learned to wear masks from humans. B. Plastics are less harmful after becoming particles. C. Used masks have a worse effect on sea creatures. D. Waste masks arc the main ocean plastic pollution.

11. How should we solve the problem from the last paragraph? A. Keep masks after they' re used. B. Call on governments to stop littering.

C. Punish those who wear single-use masks. D. Put used masks in the recycling box.

It's a popular belief that a fish's memory lasts for only seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that they don't remember what they've eaten or where they’ve been, and they don't identify you or any of their friends--every moment intheir life would be like seeing the world for the first time.

But don't be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. In fact, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago. In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This suggested that they could remember their past experiences.

In fact. scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively(挑衅地) in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past \"fights\".But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence.

Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survivein the wild. \"If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risk,\"lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.

For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence. 12. According to the text, people commonly believe that ______. A. fish don't recognize any of their friends B. a fish's memory lasts for only seven minutes C. fish can only remember part of their past experiences D. fish can remember things that happened long ago 13. How can fish benefit most from a good memory? A. They can remember their enemies and fight. B. They can remember where to get food and survive. C. They can remember their friends and help each other.

D. They can remember where to go when in danger. 14. What can we learn from the text? A. Only African cichlids have a good memory. B. African cichlids can remember things for 12 days. C. African cichlids always treat other fish aggressively. D. African cichlids don't belong to the list of smart animals. 15. What is the text mainly about? A. What we can learn from fish. B. Fish having a very bad memory. C. How fish improve their memory. D. Fish being smarter than we thought.

You’ve seen other people flying kites, watching their paper creations float up into the clouds on a windy day.___16___Kite flying isn’t hard, and it’s a lot of fun!

The first step is toget a kite and find a large, open area. Then wait for a nice windy day.___17___Otherwise, kites can get hung up on either of them. Parks with lots of grass and beaches are both great places to try kite flying.

This works well on windy days, but what if thewind isn’t strong enough to catch your kite? Then you need to let out some string and have your friend run with the kite behind him/her.___18___

Once the wind catches your kite, start letting out string, little by little.___19___It’s somewhere between fifty and a hundred feet overhead. Spread your legs to keep yourself firmly rooted to the ground, and hold the spool with both hands. If it flies too high, you can reel(卷) in the string a little.

___20___When the kite is close to the ground, have someone catch it so it doesn’t get torn or broken. Wind up the rest of your string and keep your kite safe until the next time you’re ready to fly it. A. As you fly your kite, keep an eye on it. B. Are you ready to give it a try yourself?

C. To finish flying, reel in the kite slowly.

D. Keep going till your kite is at the height you want. E. With this added burst of speed, the kite should fly.

F. Your perfect location shouldn’t have any trees or power lines. G. Keep flying your kite until you feel it’s safe in the wind again.

52.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。续写的词数150左右。

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school. On turning a cornner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”

“No” said Henry. “Let us go home quietly and not meddle with (管闲事) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together and I don’t want them to worry about me.”

“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down on Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behaviour, because he knew that they misunderstood him, and that they ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home together with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled and cried for help, but he failed. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did nothing to help him. Paragraph 1

It seemed as if Robert would be dying.
