I steeled myself and went anyway. I arrived at the train station in Paris panicked. Pulling my red suitcase behind me, I was pushed by sweaty travelers. On my first Metro ride, I gave a clumsy pickpocket a look, and he let go of my purse. At my stop, I carried my heavy suitcase up the steep stairs and froze in confusion. Somewhere in this confusing city my hotel was hidden, but suddenly I couldn't read my own directions. I stopped two people. Both had that Parisian face that said: \"Yes, I speak English, but you'll have to struggle with your French if you want to talk to me.\"
When I finally found the hotel, my heart was pounding. Then I saw my room. I couldn't stay, could I? The wallpaper looked like it had been through a fire. The bathroom was down the hall, and the window looked out onto the brick wall of another building. Welcome to Paris. It was my third week away from home and my kids, and I had arrived in the most romantic city in the world alone. Alone, lonely, and very scared.
The most important thing I did in Paris happened at that moment. I knew that if I didn't go out, right then, and find a place to have dinner, I would hide in this place my entire time in Paris. So I went out. Evening in Paris was light and warm. I walked along a winding path, listening to birds sing and watching children float toy sailboats in a huge fountain. Paris was beautiful. And I was here alone but suddenly not lonely. Overcoming my fear made me feel free, not abandoned.
During my week's stay in Paris I did everything there was to do, and it was the greatest week of my European vacation. I returned home a believer in the healing power of solitary travel. Traveling alone makes up for its problems by building self-reliance and confidence. Certainly Paris became my metaphor for

Passage 2 (2020·江苏南京市·高三月考) Sky Drive Inc. conducted a successful test drive of its new flying car on August 25 at the Toyota Test Field, one of the largest in Japan and home to the car company’s development base. The car, named SD-03, manned with a pilot, took off and circled the field for about four minutes. It was the first public demonstration for a flying car in Japanese history.
“We are extremely excited to have achieved Japan’s first-ever manned flight of a flying car in the two years since we founded SkyDrive... with the goal of commercializing such aircraft,” CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa said. “We want to realize a society where flying cars are an accessible and convenient means of
transportation in the skies and people are able to experience a safe, secure, and comfortable new way of life.”
The SD-03 is the world’s smallest electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle and takes up the space of about two parked cars, according to the company. It has eight motors to ensure “safety in emergency situations”. “In designing an unexplored, new type of transportation known as the flying car, we chose the keyword ‘progressive’ for inspiration,” Design Director Takumi Yamamot said. “We wanted this vehicle to be futuristic, charismatic and desirable for all future customers, while fully including the high technology of SkyDrive.”
The company hopes to make the flying car part of normal life and not just a product. More test flights will occur in the future under different conditions to make sure the safety and technology of the vehicle meet industry standards.
The success of this flight means that it is likely that the car will be tested outside of the Toyota Test field by the end of the year. The company will continue to develop technologies to safely and securely launch the flying car in 2023. However, no price has been announced so far. 20.What’s the feature of SD-03? 21.What do Takumi Yamamot’s words imply? A.They are the pioneer of flying cars. B.Flying cars will soon be commercialized. C.Flying cars will set a new trend in society. D.They target flying cars on high-end consumers. 22.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs? A.Flying cars fail to reach industry standards. B.Flying cars will be sold at affordable prices. C.The safety of flying cars needs strengthening. D.Tests are now limited to the Toyota Test Field. 23.What is the main idea of the text? A.Flying cars will be on the market by 2023. B.Flying cars are no longer just a flight of fancy. C.SkyDrive’s SD-03 is the flying car of tomorrow.
B.Secure and multi-function. D.Expensive and unmanned.
D.SkyDrive demonstrates its first piloted flying car.

A. types类型;B. cities城市;C. areas区域;D. sizes尺寸,大小。根据后文的“The smallest I have been through was in the African town of Hoedspruit”可知,作者见过最小的是非洲Hoedspruit小镇的机场,因此应该是讨论机场的大小(sizes)。故选D项。 2.
A. identified识别;B. handled控制;C. promoted促进,提升;D. processed加工。
A. guards保安;B. astronauts宇航员;C. pilots飞行员;D. passengers乘客。
A. tremendous巨大B. crowded拥挤的;C. international国际的;D. fashionable时尚的。的;根据前文的“The smallest I have been through was in the African town of Hoedspruit”可知,前文介绍见过的最小机场,“最小的”另一个“极端”应该是“巨大的”(tremendous)。故选A项。 5.

A. regulates规定;B. emphasizes强调;C. encounters遇到;D. demonstrates证实。

A. filled with充满;B. dominated by由…占领;C. decorated with由…装扮;D. recognized by由… 故选A项。 13.

A. simplified简单化;B. endured忍受;C. declared宣布;D. paralleled使平行。
Dear Editor,
I’ve read your discussion on how to behave properly while traveling. Every year, a great many holidaymakers go out for sightseeing and relaxation. While they are enjoying themselves, some of them behave rudely, which causes a big concern. How to be a civilized tourist has become a heated topic.
In my opinion, it is necessary to watch our manners. First, we must respect and follow local customs. Besides, we’d better not talk loudly in public places to avoid disturbance to others. Also, be aware that queue jumping is unacceptable in many countries. More importantly, if we travel abroad, we should bear in mind that we are representing our country, so we need to be cautious about how we act. Only in this way can we enjoy our trips and have beautiful memories as well.
Yours truly

I'm appealing to you for paying attention to bike sharing. It develops rapidly and now has become one of the hottest topics. But still, problems cannot be overlooked.
On the one hand, bike sharing makes it very convenient for people to travel. A bike can be found anywhere whenever you want to go out, and its rent is extremely low.In addition, never does it produce pollution, contributing to a low carbon lifestyle. On the other hand, random parking frequently bothers people. Worst of all, a small number of people break the rules , like parking illegally.Sometimes shared bikes are even left damaged for unknown reasons.
As far as I'm concerned, everyone should obey the rules, which will enable us to enjoy the convenience of public facilities. And please keep in mind that a small action can make a great difference!
The traffic signals along Factoria Boulevard in Bellevue, Washington, generally don't flash the same length of green twice in a row, especially at rush hour. At 9:30am, the full red/yellow/green signal cycle might be 140 seconds. By 9:33am, a burst of additional traffic might push it to 145 seconds. Less traffic at 9:37am could push it down to 135. Just like the traffic itself, the timing of the signals changes.
That is by design. Bellevue, a fast-growing city just east of Seattle, uses a system that is gaining popularity around the US: intersection(十字路口) signals that can adjust in real time to traffic conditions. These lights, known as adaptive signals, have led to significant declines in both the trouble and cost of travels between work and home.
“Adaptive signals can make sure that the traffic demand that is there is being addressed, ” says Alex Stevanovic, a researcher at Florida Atlantic University.
For all of Bellevue’s success, adaptive signals are not a cure-all for jammed roadways. Kevin Balke, a research engineer at the Texas A&M University Transportation Institute, says that while smart lights can be particularly beneficial for some cities, others are so jammed that only a sharp reduction in the number of cars on the road will make a meaningful difference. “It’s not going to fix everything, but adaptive signals have
some benefits for smaller cities,” he says.
In Bellevue, the switch to adaptive signals has been a lesson in the value of welcoming new approaches. In the past, there was often an automatic reaction to increased traffic: just widen the roads, says Mark Poch, the Bellevue Transportation Department’s traffic engineering manager. Now he hopes that other cities will consider making their streets run smarter instead of just making them bigger. 25.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to? A.Increased length of green lights. C.Flexible timing of traffic signals.
B.Shortened traffic signal cycle. D.Smooth traffic flow on the road.
26.What does Kevin Balke say about adaptive signals? A.They work better on broad roads. B.They should be used in other cities.
C.They have greatly reduced traffic on the road. D.They are less helpful in cities seriously jammed. 27.What can we learn from Bellevue’s success? A.It is rewarding to try new things. C.I pays to put theory into practice.

A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother---loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout(放哨) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh, Gosh…I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections(反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

根据第一段内容尤其是第一段最后一句“Just like the traffic itself, the timing of the signals changes.(就像交通本身一样,信号灯的时间也会变化)”可知,第一段主要讲述的是信号灯的时间会灵活变化;“That is by design.”
根据第四段第一句中“adaptive signals are not a cure-all for jammed roadways(但自适应信号并不是解决拥堵道路的万能药)”及第二句中“others are so jammed that only a sharp reduction in the number of cars on the road will make a meaningful difference(其他城市交通堵塞如此严重,只有减少道路上的车辆才能起有意义的作用) ”可推知,Kevin Balke认为适应性信号灯对于交通堵塞很严重的城市没有太大帮助。故选D项。
根据第二段最后一句“These lights, known as adaptive signals, have led to significant declines in both the trouble and cost of travels between work and home.(这些灯,被称为适应性信号灯,已经大大减少了通勤的麻烦和花费)”最后一段第一句“In Bellevue, the switch to adaptive signals has been a lesson in the value of welcoming new approaches.(在Bellevue,对适应性信号灯的转变是一个在欢迎新方法的价值方面的榜样)”可推知,从Bellevue的成功中可以得出,尝试新事物是值得的。故选A项。

Dear Jim,
I’m pleased that you’re coming to tour in China.
I suggest that you begin from Beijing, and I’ll show you around. Tianjin will be your next stop. After that, you can go to Shanghai, where you can stay for a week. You can take high-speed trains to both cities. Summer in these cities is hot and rainy, so take summer wear plus an umbrella with you. Looking forward to your arrival.
that you’re coming to tour in China.和that you begin from Beijing, and I’ll show you around. where you can stay for a week. Passage 2 The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. Thinking of this tent, Mom 【答案】
suggested that we go camping in the next village in excitement, with her eyes glittering. Considering her enthusiasm, we all agreed. When the door of our car opened, Mom stormed out instantly and urged us to put up the tent. David and I were asked to pick up some branches to build a fire. And when we came back, Dad and Mom had already lain down the grass comfortably in front of the tent, talking merrily with a local boy at our age, who kept glancing at this tent curiously. Soon we learnt that the boy in rags even didn’t have a home to live in. Of course, Mom “forgot” to take this tent with us again.
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. And we also had a nice time living with my grandparents during that trip. But what impressed me most was that tent, which was forgotten deliberately by Mom. Though she did love going camping, she presented that poor boy with this tent out of sympathy. It was Mom that made my childhood colorful. And it was also she that showed me the true meaning of giving.
首先,根据文章当中第二段内容比较开心的基调,第一段的故事情节应该比较偏向正面感情色彩,例如:我们在露营过程中一起搭建帐篷的开心时光或露营过程中的趣事(尤其是前文有铺垫妈妈是个forgetful的人,这一点也可以埋下伏笔来表达后面过程中由于妈妈健忘而带来的趣事)(也有同学在此处描述了露营过程中对其他陌生人提供帮助,来集中体现nice这一个点);
最终把故事的落脚点放在“家人的感情”“亲情”“生活的乐趣”“与妈妈一起的趣事”等等角度都可以的;当然也有同学描述与陌生人的相遇,引出了陌生人的善意这个主题;总之这次的话题比较开放,情节可以写的角度比较多;
Mom suggested that we go camping in the next village in excitement, with her eyes glittering. Considering her enthusiasm, we all agreed. what引导的主语从句和which引导的非性定语从句But what impressed me most was that tent, which was forgotten deliberately by Mom.
