摘要：The invention provides an improved apparatus for directional boring and inparticular an improved system for boring through hard and rocky substrates frequentlyencountered when boring under obstacles such as roadways. According to one aspect ofthe invention, a directional drilling apparatus includes a drilling head having a front face
angled relative to the lengthwise axis of the tool and configured for steering the drillingapparatus, a housing having an internal chamber for mounting an electronic locatingdevice therein rearwardly of the drilling head for transmitting a signal indicating theorientation of the angled face of the drilling head, and a joint at which the drilling head isremovably mounted to the housing of the locating device. The joint includes a splinedconnection for passing torque from the sonde housing to the bit and an interlockmechanism which mechanically secures the bit to the sonde housing in a mannerpermitting the bit to be manually removed from the housing without undue difficulty.
