3.(8分)In today’s world life is fast. If you don’t slow down to enjoy it, you will definitely miss something. I’ve got two young boys and I have up until recently been an elementary school teacher. Days were busy. Get the boys ready for school and daycare. Work a full day. Pick them up after school. Cook dinner. Do housework. Get the boys into bed and before I knew it, the day was over! Time for me to hit the sack and do it all over again the next day!
Don’t get me wrong. I wouldn’t change anything. The boys are great. Everyone just gets stuck in these daily routines and tends to forget about fun until that one vacation week a year. Everyone needs a break and should have fun all year round. Just set aside one day a week and just go and do something. There are so many fun family things to do that won’t break the bank. You don’t need to head out to that theme park and spend a month’s salary on one day. A nice day at the park or museum can entertain everyone. There are nearby
state parks that you can easily run out to and camp in for under $50 for the entire family. How about family movie night? What about family video game night? There are so many ideas that folks seem to forget about. I encourage you to take a look at Modern Frugal Family. You can find all sorts of fun stuff to do with the family and search for all sorts of bargains. I know you will come up with some great ideas. If you do, you can share them with everyone. So get out there and enjoy life!

Coincidentally (巧合地), Meng Shuqi, Feng’s classmate, realized that one of her relatives couldn’t access updated information or books due to the lack of Braille materials available.
They then teamed up to help the blind by fixing the problem. Feng and Meng, both 14, study at No 37 Middle School in Taiyuan, Shanxi province. After one year, the two teenagers succeeded in inventing a new kind of Braille reader. In July, their work won first prize in a national competition aiming to nurture (培养) creative thinking by encouraging youths to solve social issues. The invention was also granted (授予) a national patent (专利).
When connected to a computer, their Braille reader can turn words into raised dots (凸起的点). Blind people can then read by touching the dots, which are actually magnets (磁铁). This is the first Braille reader that uses magnets.

2. What does the underlined phrase “hit the sack” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
3. We can learn from the passage that the author ________.
“After doing market research by comparing different Braille readers, we found that the current Braille readers are very complex and expensive. Each of them sells for over 10,000 yuan,” Feng said. “So we decided to develop a user-friendly product especially for young blind children from grades 1 to 3. Moreover, it only costs about 2,000 yuan.”
To make the invention, the team mastered structural (结构的) design, 3D drawing, hardware (硬件) construction, programming and physical design. They learned these knowledge and skills by reading online materials and turning to their mentor (指导老师), Hu Jiangong.
“Both of them have stronger hands-on skills and abilities in solving practical problems than other students,” Hu said.
“The 3D drawing was the basic and most challenging part,” Feng said. “With only a precise (精确的) 3D drawing of the Braille reader, we can conveniently create the device. So we made lots of adjustments and changes to the drawing.”
After making their first device, Feng and Meng visited a school for the blind to get advice. They then improved their device based on the students’ needs. For example, they changed the size of the screen and the amount of space between the dots.
“We hope the invention will be popularized (普及) in the future to help those blind people who can’t afford the Braille reader now,” Meng told Taiyuan News.

B. To improve their Braille reader. C. To send students their Braille reader. D. To teach students to use the Braille reader.
5.(8分)My mother-in-law left us an unexpected and priceless gift. After she died, my husband and his sister were going through the contents of her house when they discovered every letter that we had written her during our 46-year marriage. She also kept all the letters that my mother had written to her over the years.
During the pandemic (大流行病), I’ve had time to go through these letters. I read of our early married life, our struggle to have children and, especially, the progress of our three children from birth to adulthood. I began writing all these details for my children, and now they have details about when they were small. I discovered much that I had forgotten.
To read the letters written by my mother to my husband’s mother is a gift. I wish that I had saved my mother’s letters to me, but now I have these letters that tell me things about my own mother that I never knew. I see that Mom and Mamma shared their great love for us, their children, and for our children, their grandchildren.
I come from a long line of letter writers and was trained to stay in touch with our parents. My grandparents loved to receive letters from across the ocean. When I was away on a student exchange in 1970, my mother told me that my grandfather kept my airmail letters in his shirt pocket and read them daily. Knowing this, I have tried my best to write to our two families regularly.
To all of you who write to me, I thank you. The handwritten word is a powerful tool of friendship; it connects us together.
Perhaps the greatest gift that these letters have given me is to see how much my husband’s parents cherished our letters to them. The letters helped her know her grandchildren and feel like part of our lives. I shall file (归档) them for my children so that they can read the events of our lives and know that they, too, were cherished.
Keep writing to those you love. Those letters are our greatest gifts to each other. 1. What did the author do after she read the letters? A. She had a talk with her mother. B. She passed on the letters to her children.
C. She required her children to write letters regularly. D. She wrote down details about her children’s childhood. 2. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A. How the author stayed in touch with her parents. B. What handwritten letters mean to the author. C. What inspired the author to keep writing letters.
D. How the author’s grandfather influenced her.
3. What is the power of handwritten words according to the article? A. They help us make new friends. B. They allow us to practice writing skills. C. They strengthen emotional exchanges. D. They improve our hands-on abilities.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article? A. To list the benefits of handwritten letters. B. To remind readers to cherish those they love. C. To express her thanks to her mother-in-law. D. To encourage readers to write letters.
