More than 1,680 guitar players turned out, turned up and took part in what organizers say was a world record performance of Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water---a song that was the first many of them ever learned.
Some came from as far away as California and Germany on Sunday to take part in a Kansas City radio station's effort to break a Guinness world record for the most people playing the same song simultaneously. The record had been 1,323 people playing the same song at the same time in Vancouver, in 1994.
\"It was cool to see little kids playing, people who had been playing for their whole lives, like older people, and then I'm sure there were people like me who just picked up the song a couple days before,\" said Autumn McPherson, a senior at the University of Kansas. “I thought it was going to be kind of cheesy(俗气),” said Hannah Koch. “But after I got there, I got caught up in the excitement of it.”
Tanna Guthrie, a morning show host for KYYS (99.7 FM), came up with the idea for the record attempt. She said her station will send participant sign-up lists, photos, videos and copies of media coverage to Guinness seeking official recognition of a record. Guthrie said she chose Smoke on the Water, a track off Deep Purple's \"Machine Head\" album, because it's one of the first songs many guitarists learn. \"You never know if you can pull something like this off,\" she said. One of the participants, John Cardona of Hanford, California, said he brought felt-tip pens so he could get others to sign his guitar. \"It was the guitar I learned on,\" the 41-year-old said. \"It was very dispensable on the way here, but very valuable to me now.\"
51. The under lined word “simultaneously” in Paragraph 2 probably means __________. A. at the same time B. with the same purpose C. for the same reason D. in the same situation 52. Who got the idea to have so many guitar players together? A. Hannah Koch B. Autumn McPherson C. Tanna Guthrie D. John Cardona 53. The organizer chose Smoke on the Water because __________. A. it would impress people present most B. the song was popular with young people C. the players thought it was beautiful
D. it was the first song many guitar players learned 54. What can be inferred from this text?
A. 1,323 people set a world record in Kansas, in 1994. B. At first nobody would like to come to the performance.
C. Only young people could take part in the performance. D. People really enjoyed the performance in Kansas.

Steller sea lions have a reason to celebrate today. The eastern population has been taken off
the threatened species list. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) decided that the population no longer meets the criteria to be considered endangered. In 30 years, the population has grown by more than 50,000.
The Steller sea lion, also known as the northern sea lion, is the largest member of the Otariid (eared seal) family. The eastern population’s habitat ranges from the coast of Alaska to California. It is the first animal to be delisted(从表上删除) by NOAA since the eastern North Pacific gray whale. That creature was taken off the list nearly 20 years ago, NOAA spokeswoman Julie Speegle said.
Experts at NOAA recommended delisting the Steller sea lions earlier this year.
“We’re delighted to see the recovery of the eastern population of Steller sea lions,” Jim Balsiger said in a statement. He is the administrator of NOAA Fisheries’ Alaska Region. “We’ll be working with the states and other partners to monitor this population to ensure its continued health.”
The delisting of the eastern population does not affect the Steller sea lions’ western population. That group’s habitat ranges from Cape Suckling, Alaska, to Russia. The western population remains on the endangered list.
NOAA estimated there were about 18,000 sea lions in the eastern population in 1979. The group was listed as threatened in 1990. The decline was blamed on fishermen and other people killing the animals because they were eating fish and considered a “nuisance(令人讨厌的东西).” In 2010, the most recent year a count was available, the agency estimated just over 70,000 sea lions.
Although the species is being removed from the list, it will still receive protection under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, Speegle said by phone from her office in Juneau.
When an animal is delisted, the Endangered Species Act requires a monitoring plan that covers five years. NOAA has decided to double that length of time to monitor the sea lions over a 10-year period. “We are just proceeding(继续进行) carefully and cautiously to ensure that this species can be maintained in the recovered status,” she said. 55. What is the reason for Steller sea lions to celebrate? A. They are removed form the threatened species list.
B. NOAA has decided the criteria of endangered Steller sea lions. C. The eastern Steller sea lions are no longer endangered animals. D. The population of Steller sea lions has increased to 50,000.
56. From the text we know that the eastern Steller sea lion __________. A. is larger than other sea lions in the eared seal family B. mainly lives along the coast of Alaska and California
C. is the first animal to be taken off the endangered list so far D. was removed from the list last year
57. What can we learn from the text about the western population of Steller sea lions? A. It has decreased to 18,000. B. It is still listed as threatened.
C. Its habitat is affected by eastern population. 58 What is the best title for the text?
A. Control over the Population of Sea Lions C. Super News for Sea Lions
D. It moved from Alaska to Russia. B. Habitat of Steller Sea Lions
D. Criteria of Endangered Sea Lions

People have a love-hate relationship with DEET, the critical ingredient(组成部分) in many insect repellents(驱虫剂). The chemical is great at driving away biting pests like mosquitoes. But it’s also expensive---and may cause health problems in people. The good news: Scientists have just reported finding alternatives that are safer and less expensive.
The recently identified chemicals work as well as DET. Some are even safe enough to use in food. And these repellents don’t smell like disgusting chemicals: They smell like grapes. The scientists reported their discovery October 2 in Nature.
For many people, access to more affordable mosquito repellents is a life-or-death situation. Mosquitoes can carry a parasite(寄生虫) that causes malaria(疟疾). This deadly disease kills more than 500,000 people every year. “DEET could help, but people in many malaria regions can’t afford it,” said Anandasankar Ray, a scientist who studies insects at the University of California.
Before they could find the new substitutes, Ray and his coworkers had to figure out how DEET works. People have been using it for 60 years, but no one knew how it repelled bugs. “It’s remained a mystery for so long,” Ray said.
His team solved that mystery with a study on fruit flies. (Fruit flies and mosquitoes are similar insects, but fruit flies are easier to work with.) First, the scientists changed some genes in the flies Genes determine how a cell works. Ray’s team inserted genes that mad the flies’ nerve cells light up when active.
Next the researchers exposed the altered flies to DEET. Some of the nerve cells in the flies’ antennae(触角) lit up, the scientists observed. Those cells contained a receptor called Ir40a, which reacts to DEET by sending a “get away!” signal to the cell. That receptor holds the secret to DEET’s power: Without Ir40a, mosquitoes won’t go away.
With DEET’s secret in hand, Ray and his coworkers searched for existing chemical compounds(复合物) that would activate Ir40a in the same way. They considered only compounds that came from plants or animals or that already had been tested and found safe. And finally these compounds are found in grapes.
59. The DEET is mentioned in the first paragraph to __________. A. prove its effectiveness against mosquitoes B. introduce the new findings of its alternatives C. show why it is harmful to people D. explain why it is too expensive
60. What does the underlined part “the new substitutes” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. DEET. B. Ir40a.
C. The changed genes inserted in flies.
D. The newly-found chemicals with grape scents. 61. How does DEET drive away mosquitoes?
A. It contains disgusting chemicals giving off a special smell.
B. It kills mosquitoes by making their nerve cells light up. C. It activates Ir40a to send “get away” signals. D. It kills mosquitoes by changing their genes.
62. What can we learn about Ray’s study on DEET? A. It compared fruit flies and mosquitoes. B. It helped to find safer repellents.
C. It tried to find out the key ingredient of DEET. D. It experimented on mosquitoes.

作文
Dear John Smith,
I’m Li Hua. I learned from the internet that you need volunteers in Dogs Trust. I’m interested in it. Therefore, I’m writing to recommend myself as a qualified candidate for it.
I think I’m qualified for the job. I’m an exchanged student studying in London and I will have a holiday from July to August 30, which makes it possible for me to work 10 hours per week. Besides, I’m patient with animals and I have a strong sense of responsibility, which I think is of great importance to a volunteer. What’s more, I have a experience of caring dogs. Therefore, it’s easy for me to provide daily care for the dogs and assist training classes.
There is no doubt that I’m the right person for to the job. I’ll appreciate it if you can consider my application. I am looking forward to your reply.
