摘要：Fracture separation region production, by surface hardening to embrittle webtips between depressions formed in a low to medium carbon steel component using anenergy beam, is new. A fracture region, for fracture separation of a carbon steelcomponent, is formed using an energy beam (laser or electron beam) by: (a) melting,evaporating and/or expelling funnel-shaped depressions, separated from one another bywebs, along one side of the fracture separation plane (5, 5') from the component surface(6, 6') outwards; and (b) cutting the near-surface web tips of adjacent depressions, havingbrittle cross-sections formed by self-quenching, to form hardening cracks as startercracks for fracture separation. The novelty is that, when the component (1, 1') is made ofcarbon steel of 0.5% C content, at least the web tips are embrittled by surface hardening.An Independent claim is also included for a control ring treated by the above process.
