\"I will if Mother doesn’t mind.\" said Beth.

Mrs. March agreed to the plan and said they could try it for a week.

\"But,\" she added, \"I think by Saturday night you will find that all play and no work is as bad as all work and no play.\" Next day, Meg appeared at ten o'clock and ate breakfast alone. It was a lonely meal and the room was untidy, because Beth had not cleaned it.

Jo went to the river with Laurie, then sat in the apple tree and read a book. Beth began to tidy things in her cupboard, but she got tired and left it half-done. She went to her piano, glad that she did not have to wash the cups and plates. Amy sat in the garden to draw, hoping someone would see her and say something nice about her picture. But no one appeared, so she went for a walk, got caught in the rain and came home very wet.

At tea, everyone said that it had been a happy but unusually long day. Meg, who had been shopping in the afternoon, now decided that she did not like the dress she had bought. Jo had a headache from reading too long. Beth couldn't find anything in her cupboard, and the rain had made Amy’s dress so wet that she couldn’t wear it to Katy Brown’s party the next day.

Mrs. March listened, smiled and said nothing.

The week seemed to get longer and longer with nothing much to do, and by Friday the girls were glad that it was nearly over. Then Mrs. March gave Hannah a holiday, and when the girls got up on Saturday, there was no breakfast ready, no fire in the kitchen, and no mother waiting for them.

\"What has happened?\" said Jo.

Meg ran upstairs, then came down to say that Mother was staying in her room to have a rest.

\"She says we must look after ourselves today.\" Meg said. \"Good, I want something to do.\" said Jo.

Secretly, they were all pleased to have something useful to do again. Beth and Amy put cups and plates on the table while Jo and Meg got the breakfast, then Meg took some tea and an egg up to Mrs. March. The tea was too strong and the egg was burned. Mrs. March did not complain, but she laughed to herself afterwards.

15、Linda Evans was my best friend—like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding.

When I was 13, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special time—like my wedding (婚礼) and Linda’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent

came back, stamped “Address (地址) Unknown. ” I had no idea how to find Linda.

Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share (分享) happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.

One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagman— Linda’s married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans,” I thought, but J still wrote to her. She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs Tobin!” she said excitedly, “Linda Evans Wagman is my mother. ” Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each other’s lives. 16、①What does the city of the future look like? Flying cars? Robots? Or smog(烟雾)-eating buildings?

②Arconic, an American company, has made plans to build a 4.8-kilometer-high skyscrape(r 摩天大楼). It says that the

super tall building can clean not only itself but also theair around it by “eating” smog and pollutant(s

污染物). But how

is it done?

③Sherri McCleary, s scientist at Arconic, says they have introduced a new technology called EcoClean. It is a special coating that pulls pollutants out of the air. With a little help from sunlight and water vapour(水蒸气),the coating will

produce atom(s 原子能)called free radical(s 自由基). It is these free radicals that will take in air pollutants, break them

down, and then leave the air cleaner.

④But “eating” smog and pollutants is not the only thing this skyscraper is able to do. In fact, thanks to 3D printing, the materials the building used will become even better and stronger---not only making the skyscraper look more modern, but also make it possible to stand strong winds and terrible weather.

⑤However, some people don’t think it will work out well. Air pollution has its own character and it harms lots of cities. Does the smog-eating building have such a magical ability to stop the pollution? It seems impossible to bring the pollution under control in a short time. We should prepare ourselves for a hard fight against the pollution. ⑥Sounds impossible? Anyway, Arconic believes a skyscraper of this kind will be built by 2062. 1.EcoClean works by A.standing terrible weather C.breaking down free radicals

. B.bowling out air pollutants D.pulling pollutants out of the air .

2.The fourth paragraph is mainly about A.what Arconic is

B.how EcoClean works

C.what else this skyscraper can do D.why scientist want to build this skyscraper

. 3.Arconic’s attitude(态度)towards the skyscraper can best be described as A.hopeful

B.regretful

C.thankful

D.unbelievable

. 4.The writer’s purpose of writing this article is to A.bring people some pleasure B.introduce a wonderful technology C.show how to build the tall building

D.tell us the importance of protecting the environment

“Why does the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!”

That’s an old joke in the west, but it came to my mind again when I saw people crossing the road at the intersection of Shaanxi Road and Huaihai Road in Shanghai.

When the traffic light was red, a group of people were waiting for the light to change. Suddenly one man began rushing

to the other side of the road. Soon others followed him at the crossing and more people did the same. Just like chickens, they didn’t mind the honking horns(喇叭声) and kept crossing the road in a mess.

Every year several thousand people are either killed or hurt on the roads in Shanghai. And at least one third of them were jaywalking(乱穿马路). Jaywalking is very common in Shanghai. It seems that jaywalkers are not afraid of the danger to themselves.

Traffic laws are to keep people safe. So we should obey them, and have good road-crossing habits. When someone starts to jaywalk, we should stop him, and never follow him. That way we can avoid the traffic accidents.

1. Why did the writer talk of the joke?

A. Set the background B. give an example C.Play a joke D.express a pity

2. Why were so many people dead or hurt on the roads in Shanghai?

A.Be cause they liked Jaywalking

B. Because they didn’t obey the traffic rules. C. Because someone asked them to cross the road D. Because there were no policemen on the roads.

3. The underlined word “intersection” here probably means “

”. D.traffic A.road B.bridge C.crossing

4.The writer saw people A. crossing the road in a mess

in Shanghai that day. B. waiting for the green light patiently C.crossing the road with chickens

D.hurting each other in the street

5. How does the writer like what he saw in Shanghai that day?

A.He thinks it’s OK. C.He has no idea of it. Ⅴ.书面表达

B.He thinks it’s wrong. D.He doesn’t mention it

The summer holiday is coming. Your classmates are talking about what to do during the holiday.

Some are going out for travelling with their families. Of course they will spend more money. Some are going to play ball games with their classmates. Though it's good for health, it's not my favourite.

I think it's much better to stay at home. I can do many things as I like, such as reading, watching TV and helping my parents with the housework. In this way I can not only increase my knowledge but also do something for my parents.
