It’s a Thursday afternoon. People are walking around as usual. You’re just about to cross a street near a park. Out jumps a man in black. He rushes to you and takes away your bag. What are you going to do?
“Help!” You will call out to the people passing by for help, right? Yes, it’s common to call out loudly, but not to a certain person. Hopefully, someone will stand out or at least call the police for you. But what if they don’t stop to help you?
Most of the time, most of the people who are near you do not want to offer help. But the bystander effect (旁观者效应) stops them from doing so. What is this effect about? In a group, everyone in the group may think that others will step up to help. As a result, no one takes the action to help. In some situation, someone may finally decide to help, but it may already be too late.
So, what should you do on earth?
In this situation, remember to ask one exact person for help. For example, you may say, “please call the police

Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times, there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gathers, small, tightly knit (联系) groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just 5 to10 million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of these people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory (义务的) education, especially globalization and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are gradually taking over.
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution (分布) of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small members. Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1,000; Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number (中位数) of speakers is mere 6,000, which means that half the world’s languages are

spoken by fewer people than that.
Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction, with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Gameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark); none of these seemed to have much chance of survival.

29.What does the underlined word “uneven” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Unusual.
B.Unreasonable.
C.Unequal.
D.Unscientific.
30.How many languages are spoken by less than 6,000 people at present?
A.About 6,800. B.About 3,400. 31.What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Now languages will be created.
B.People’s lifestyles are reflected in languages. C.Geography determines language development. D.Social development results in fewer languages.

At the same time,I found myself suddenly having an interest in weather. I always wished rain to water my little garden. My brother Alex teased me.“ You are an old farmer now.”
One day,I found some tomatoes gone in one plant. I was a little sad. Who dared to steal my tomatoes? It was a few rabbits. When I was about to drive them away,my dad stopped me and said,“ Alice, the rabbits are thirsty. Let them eat as much as they want. Sharing your food is a good thing.”
Later on,I found people picking a few tomatoes in my little garden and eating them with a satisfying smile. I never said a word. Instead,I felt joy in my heart. When harvest time came,I picked so many fresh cucumbers and delicious tomatoes.

Many of us now live in gated communities(封闭式社区). Only people who live there can go freely inside, and only their cars can pass through the gates. But are you hoping for a more open and convenient environment? When gates and walls are gone, everyone can enjoy a city with bigger green areas for picnics and more cafes and bookstores to meet your friends.
Turning gated communities into blocks is one way to achieve this, according to the Chinese government. On Feb. 21, China said that gated communities should be open to the public.
Open communities have already become popular in many cities of other countries, like Paris, France, and New York City, US. There, the roads, shops and green areas are for everyone.
Another good change that blocks may bring is better traffic in cities, according to Professor Li Hongchang from Beijing Jiaotong University. There will be more roads open to the public. And more people may choose to
