Visiting China as a Guest: What You Need to Know Hi there! My name is Emma and I'm 10 years old. A few months ago, my family went on a big trip to China and it was super cool! We got to see so many amazing things. But there were also some things that were pretty different from back home that we had to get used to. If you're planning a trip to China, here are some important things to keep in mind! Language Barriers

One of the biggest challenges we faced in China was the language barrier. Unlike in America where most people speak English, very few people in China speak it fluently outside of major cities. My parents tried to learn some basic Mandarin phrases before we went, but it was still really hard to communicate sometimes.

A lot of places had English translations on menus and signs, but sometimes the translations didn't make much sense. One time we accidentally ordered a dish that had chicken feet in it because the menu description was confusing! My brother Tommy thought it was gross but I thought it was kind of fun to try something so different.

If you're going to China, I'd recommend downloading a translation app on your phone or bringing a phrasebook. And be prepared that some things might get lost in translation - just go with the flow and it'll be an adventure! Different Customs

China has a lot of cultural customs that are different from what we're used to. For example, it's considered rude to show the bottom of your feet or to put your feet up on furniture. Whoops, I got told off for doing that a couple times before I remembered!

Another custom is that you're supposed to use both hands when giving something to another person as a sign of respect. I had to really concentrate to remember that one. Some customs take a bit of getting used to!

One thing my parents struggled with was knowing how much to tip. Unlike in the US where you're expected to tip servers and drivers, in China you generally don't need to tip for services. A few times my dad tried to leave a tip and the servers politely refused it. It made him feel awkward but that's just their culture. The Food

Ah, the food in China was amazing but also pretty different! Of course you can find stuff like fried rice and dumplings, but there's so much more. We tried tons of crazy dishes with ingredients like sea cucumber, century eggs (which are eggs preserved for weeks so the yolk goes green and smells funky), and stinky tofu (which really lives up to its name!).

One dish I'll never forget is the famous Peking roast duck. The skin was so crispy and the meat was tender and juiced up with all these delicious sauces. Definitely my new favorite food! For breakfast, instead of having things like pancakes or cereal, we'd often have dough fritters, soup dumplings, or congee (which is a savory rice porridge). My little sister wasn't a huge fan at first but after a few days she was hooked!

Just be aware that food in China tends to be quite different from Western food. A lot of it was delicious but some dishes were pretty out there for our tastes. My advice is to go in with an open mind (and don't be afraid to ask what's in something before you order!). Transportation

Getting around China was a bit of an adventure too. In the big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, the subway systems were

awesome - fast, cheap, and way less crowded than I expected. Just be prepared to do a lot of walking too since the stations can be far apart.

We did take taxis a few times but that could be nerve-wracking with the language barrier. Our taxi drivers definitely took us the looooong way around a couple times so we got overcharged. It's a good idea to negotiate the fare beforehand or get your hotel to call a taxi for you.

For longer journeys between cities, we took high-speed bullet trains which were really efficient and comfortable. Just make sure you validate your tickets before boarding - we missed that step once and felt super silly!

The one transportation method I didn't love was the long bus rides. They tended to be crowded with no air conditioning in the summer heat. I'm just glad I didn't have to take one of those mega 20+ hour bus marathons that some travelers do! Incredible Sites

Despite some of the small difficulties, China had some of the coolest and most incredible sites I've ever seen. Walking along the Great Wall was my favorite - it went on forever across the

mountains in every direction! It was hard going uphill but the views were so worth it.

The Forbidden City in Beijing was mindblowing too. All those ancient temples, palaces, and gardens all sprawled out over millions of square feet. It's hard to imagine how the emperors and their families lived there hundreds of years ago.

We also went to Chengdu to see the famous giant pandas, which are just about the cutest creatures on the planet. Did you know baby pandas are actually smaller than a stick of butter when they're born? So tiny and squeaky!

There were cool things to see absolutely everywhere we went, from the karst mountains around Guilin to the neon lights of downtown Shanghai. Every day was an adventure! The Crowds

Okay, one last thing that really struck me about China - the crowds! There are just SO many people, especially in the big cities. The sidewalks, subways, tourist sites, and stores were always packed.

It took some getting used to being constantly surrounded by masses of people. More than once I got separated from my

parents briefly in a crowd and totally freaked out. The noise levels on busy streets was also pretty overwhelming at times. My advice is to just embrace the chaos! The crowds and energy are all just part of the incredible experience of visiting China. As long as you stick close to your family and keep your belongings secure, you'll be fine. And the masses of people are a testament to what an amazing, vibrant country China is.

So those are some of the key things I learned about visiting China! At the end of the day, any small difficulties were

completely worth it for the incredible experience. China is such a fascinating country with beautiful landscapes, incredible history, and rich culture. I'll always treasure the memories of our trip and hopefully I can go back again someday!
