Researchers have developed paper that can be printed with UV light (紫外线), free from the need for ink (油墨). People can clear the information away on the light-printable paper by heating it to 120°C and it can be reused more than 80 times. The research was carried out in order to reduce the effects of paper production on

deforestation (滥砍滥伐). The researchers, from Shandong University in China and the University of California, Riverside, said that the secret behind the technology is a color-changing chemical. A thin coating of the chemical can be used on usual paper and turn it into a reusable, light-printable one. Heating the paper for 10 minutes can help clear the information away more quickly.

Professor Yadong Yin, a chemistry professor at the University of California and a co-author of the study, said, “The greatest importance of our work is the development of a new technology to produce an ink-free rewritable paper that has the same feel and appearance as usual paper. Our work is believed to have great economic and environmental influences on the modem society.” Paper production has a bad influence on the environment. It’s the main cause of industrial pollution and paper thrown away by people makes up about 40% of landfills where waste is buried under the ground.

It is predicted that light-printable paper will be inexpensive in the future. The printing process is also more cost-effective than the usual one as no ink is needed. Most importantly, it can be reused many times, which greatly reduces the cost. ()38. Why did researchers do the research? A. To make more money by selling the paper. B. To save more ink and more money.

C. To make people interested in writing on the paper. D. To stop people from cutting down more trees. ()39. What does the underlined word “it” refer to? A. Usual paper. B. The chemical. C. The technology. D. Ink.

()40. What can’t we know from Paragraph 3?

A. The rewritable paper looks the same as the usual paper. B. Wasted papa: is the most serious pollution.

C. The research will make a difference to our economic development. D. Our environment will be influenced by the rewritable paper. ()41. What are the advantages of the rewritable paper? a. It can be recycled many times. b. It can help save money.

c. It is environmentally-friendly. d. It will help save time. A. abc B. bed C. acd . D. abd E

Living abroad brings many challenges. One of them is looking for the best way to get used to a new culture while not losing your identity (身份). In this process I have noticed that it’s very positive to keep in touch with expats, especially with expats from your own country. Why? Read on.

I have been in Germany for one year and I have had many experiences. Some of them

were more positive than others. But when unexpected things happened, it was nice to meet with other Colombians to listen to their experiences. Through the talk, I have realized that others have felt the same, and that I am not the only one who has had difficulties. I also believe that they have taken something from my experience.

Colombians are really friendly and usually don’t have any problems with meeting new people. This has helped me to increase my social network quickly. When I arrived in Germany, I had two Colombian friends here, and I have kept in touch with one of them who helped me to meet other people, not only Colombians.

Most likely, if you are a foreigner in Germany, your native (本国的)language is not German. This is the way it is in my case. My native language is Spanish and I really, enjoy speaking it. But it's even better when I can share my opinions, thoughts, and worries with other expats, or when I can talk about topics which would not seem interesting to local Germans. Besides, it’s possible to use jokes that only those who come from the same country or the same comer of the world can understand.

I like social networks and since I arrived in Germany, I have been connected with other expats through , Twitter and Instagram. On these social networks, I can communicate with others and share my experiences. At the same time, I also find interesting information that I don’t usually get in other forms of media, such as information about jobs, apartments, language courses, offers of Colombian products and events which are not in the local newspapers. ()42. Who are most probably expats? A. People who face many challenges. B. People who have lost their identities. C. People who love trying different cultures. D. People who have lived in another country.

()43. Why did the writer exchange experiences with other Colombians? A. To get positive experiences.

B. To avoid difficulties he may face.

C. To feel less worried after knowing their difficulties. D. To say something nice to make them feel good.

()44. What does the writer want to show by mentioning his Colombian friends? A. Colombians are really friendly.

B. Colombian friends can help him make more friends. C. It’s very important to meet new people.

D. There are ways to increase social networks quickly. ()45. What does the writer mainly want to tell us? A. The importance of social networks.

B. Personal experiences in a foreign country. C. How to solve challenges in a foreign country. D. How important to communicate with expats. 第二卷非选择题(25分)

Dear Sandy,

I’m really glad that you can share your problems and feelings with me. Here is my advice. First, it’s a good choice to take up a hobby to help you relax and reduce your pressure. Second, you can make plans for your everyday life. After you study for about two hours, you can take a walk outside and try to relax. Besides, don’t stay up late. It’s not good for your health. Third, never argue you’re your parents. You should learn to understand them and spend some time communicating with them. Discuss your problems with them and tell them your ideas. They will help you find better ways to solve them. In a word, you will have a happier life with less pressure as long as you study hard and often talk with your parents. Yours, Nancy

Three people were sitting around a table in a restaurant in Brazil. How much do you think each of them tipped?

The Briton asked,“It's common to tip 10 percent, right?” The American woman cried,“Oh,I was planning to leave 20 percent!” And the Chinese asked,“What's a tip?”

Although it is not a custom to tip in China, tipping is a big deal in Western countries. When traveling to countries like the US and Canada,it is common to tip about 10 to 15 percent of the bill.

Usually, people give tips to a waiter or waitress when they eat in a restaurant. The

US tops the list of the biggest restaurant tips, with waiters and waitresses expecting to get 10 to 25 percent of the total bill.So if you order $100(about 662 yuan)worth of food, you are expected to pay your waiter at least $15,making your total payment $115.But why is this? Many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US minimum wage(最低工资)and work for tips to make up for that.According to the American travel website TripAdvisor, some states pay their servers only $2.13 per hour.It is not just for waiters, either.Hotel maids, hairdressers and taxi drivers also usually work for tips.

Besides the US,tipping is also popular in some Southeast Asian countries, such as Indonesia and Thailand. However,in Japan there is a no-tipping culture and it may

actually be rude if you try to give him money. 【主旨大意】 本文介绍了各国不同的小费文化。

Humans use electricity to light up the night sky.But did you know that nature itself can glow(发光), too?

Scientists have found many glowing creatures, most of which live in the ocean. Some use their lights to communicate.Others shine to hunt,to mate or to protect themselves. The vampire squid(幽灵蛸),for example, gives out a cloud of light to scare enemies.

Researchers around the world are looking into nature's lights for new ideas. In 2013,the US company Gleaux said it had created the world's first light-producing

plant,reported Daily Mail.It is a genetically-modified(转基因的)plant that keeps

glowing like fireflies.

“People have dreamed about this stuff for many years,” said Alexander Krichevsky, the company's founder. He and other researchers are working toward a future in which glowing plants replace lamps and glowing trees line highways.Krichevsky also hopes the technology could be used in crops, making them glow to let farmers know when they need water or are ready to be picked.

While Gleaux is working on glowing plants, the French company Glowee is trying to use glowing bacteria to light up shop windows and street signs. It is the same type of bacteria that causes a type of squid to light up.It is grown in a lab, reported New Scientist online.

In 2016,Glowee created a bacteria-powered light that glowed for three days. The

company is working on a light that shines brighter, lasts longer and comes in different colors.

“Our goal is to change the way we produce and use light,” said Glowee founder Sandra Rey.“We want to offer a global solution that will reduce the 19 percent of electricity consumption used to produce light.”

All around the world, there are laws regarding ages where we can or cannot do things. Many countries, like the United States, have minimum ages for drinking alcohol, driving, gambling, and marriage.I disagree with many of these laws and feel they should be changed. Not because I think children should be allowed to do these things, but because many of these laws concerning young people's freedom don't make sense.I also think they are too inconsistent—they really differ from place to place—especially in the US!

In many US states, the legal age for drinking alcohol is 21,since it's seen as the age when young people become adults. But I feel that most of us are already adults by the time we reach 18—after all, that's when we start college and move out of our family homes.Eighteen is also the age when we can get married.Personally,I think they got it the wrong way around! Why are we allowed to get married at 18,but not allowed to drink alcohol?People should wait until after college to get married, since it's a big decision that affects the rest of our lives.

The legal ages for driving and gambling don't make sense to me either because they are different from place to place. For example,in some states, the driving age is 16,but in others,it is 15.In Hawaii, young people will have to wait until they turn 18 before they can take driving lessons.Gambling is the same.In cities like Colorado, you can only gamble when you turn 21,but you only need to be 18 in New York or 16 in Maine. It's confusing!I wish there weren't so many different laws.

However, there are some laws that are becoming better. For instance, the legal voting age in the US used to be 21,but now it's 18.I hope it'll gradually be made even lower.Young people shouldn't be prohibited from choosing their leaders.I think anyone who wants to vote should be allowed to.

Finally,I think us young people have the power to change this situation.Write to your leaders in the government and let them know how you feel!
