Title: Western and Eastern's Cultural Difference Based on Catering Culture

Thesis Statement:

Western countries differ from Eastern countries in catering concept,catering content, the way of eating and cooking as well as table manners and tablewares.

Thesis Proposal:

1. Introduction

As the saying goes:\"Food is the paramount necessity of the people\" . Catering culture is an important part of a nation's culture in the worldwide. Two different kinds of culture arise due to the different social culture,historical culture and the differences in all kinds of social backgrounds. Catering culture of Western and Eastern world is a crucial part of national cultural difference. The paper will highlight the differences in catering concept, catering content, the way of eating and cooking as well as table manners and tablewares. The concrete analysis of these catering cultural differences will help us to have a better understanding of the catering culture in Western and Eastern world, promoting the culture exchange as well as avoiding the embarrassments in cross-cultural communication. It can also promote economic integration and economic globalization as well as cultural exchange in the worldwide.

2. Domestics researches on the subject.

The trend of researching Chinese catering culture arose in 1980s. As we all know that we Chinese attach great importance to the theory that\" man is an integral part of nature \"while the Western countries pay much attention to\" people oriented \". Many Chinese professors and academics have worked on the research of catering culture, such as Anjing 's Unscramble the

United States, Li HaiFang's Analyses the Western Diet Culture Differences, Zhao HongEn and Li BaoXi's Chinese Traditional Culture Through Aaron, Xu XianLing and LiZu's Western Diet Culture and Chinese Diet culture and so on. Ma Hongmei points that food is an essential point for the survival of humankind and nothing can be more important. Catering is also a kind of culture ,an important part of all kinds of culture. As for catering in Western and Eastern countries there exist all kinds of distinctions. We can also have a better understanding of the differences lying in national form ,national psychology and national characteristics. Liyuan did a research about catering concepts, catering phenomenon and the way of eating in 2009. From which we can easily find out the differences in catering culture in Western and Eastern world as well as the features of national characteristics and value. 3. Overseas researches on the subject.

Many foreign professors and academics also have worked on the catering differences between the Western world and the Eastern world. Some books on the topic have been published such as Whittemore and AH Wu-Williams's Diet, physical activity, and colorectal cancer among Chinese in North America and China. Shapouri and T Rosen published Global diet compositions: factors behind the changes and implications of the new trends together. 4. The main contents,methods and significance of your thesis.

This paper mainly uses exploratory research method, information research method, the literature research method , comparative analysis and summarize to analyze the ways the Western countries differ from the Eastern countries in catering concept, catering content,the way of eating and cooking as well as table manners and tablewares. There exist many differences in Western world and Eastern world as well as many diverses. And many of the conventions have caused jokes, which is objective. Catering culture is a crucial part of International culture. The cultural differences between the Eastern and Western world is just one of the manifestations of the cross-cultural communication. Researching and analyzing the cultural differences between the Eastern and Western world can help people to accept the Western catering

culture, to pay a attention to their etiquettes ,and to have have a better hold of our national cultural characteristics when we are seeking common while putting aside the differences. In this way, we can achieve mastery and have a far better understanding of the characteristics of the Western catering culture. At the same time, we can sum up our own catering characteristics and complement each other in order to improve and enhance the quality of our catering. Meanwhile, we can carry forward the Chinese excellent catering culture traditions and constantly updated them and promote their development. We can also enhance people 's adaptive ability in cross-cultural communication and make people not feel strongly the cultural conflicts in the communication, thus embarrassments as well as misunderstandings which produce due to cultural differences can be avoided effectively. In this way, we can not only promote the cultural exchange and economic cooperation but also we can promote the common development of the Eastern and Western culture.

俗语道:“民以食为天”。饮食文化是世界各民族文化的重要组成部分。中西方国家因为深受不同的社会文化、历史文化和各种社会背景的影响,从而导致两种不同文化的产生,中西饮食文化的不同是中西方民族文化差异的重要组成部分。本文着重论述中西方饮食文化在饮食观念,饮食内容,饮食方式,烹饪方法,用餐礼仪和用餐器具方面的不同,剖析中西方饮食文化差异的具体表现,有助于我们更好地了解中西方饮食文化差异,从而促进中西方文化交流,避免双方在交流中的尴尬,促进经济一体化和全球化的发展。同时对世界范围内的

跨文化交流起到促进作用。 2. 该论题的国内研究现状

件,是最重要不过的大事,饮食也是一种文化,而且是整个文化结构中的一个重要组成部分。就中西方的饮食而言,也存在各种各样的差异,而且我们还可以透过饮食来洞察中西方人在民族形体、民族心理、民族性格等层面的差异。李媛(2009)从饮食观念、饮食对象以及饮食方式等几方面对西方饮食文化做了研究,由此看出中西方在饮食文化方面的差异,民族性

中西方的文化有着很多的差异,也存在着很多分歧,其中的很多习俗也产生了很多笑话,这是客观形成的,饮食文化是世界文化的重要组成部分,中西方文化差异是跨文化交际现象众多表现形式之一。通过对中西方饮食文化差异的研究和分析,可以培养人们积极地接受西方的饮食文化,注意西方的礼仪规范,从而在求同存异的基础上更好地把握本民族的文化特征,找出可以融会贯通的地方,更好地了解西方国家的饮食特点,同时也总结我们自己的饮食特征,取长补短,摒弃我们中的糟粕,改善和提高我们的饮食质量,同时可以弘扬中华民族优秀的饮食文化传统,使之不断得到更新和发展。增强人们在跨文化交际时的适应能力,使人们在交际中不会感受受到强烈的文化冲突,有效避免双方在交流中的尴尬及双方在交际中由于文化差异而产生的不理解或误解,从而促进中西方文化文化交流与经济合作,促进东西方的文化的共同发展。
