About one million years ago, the Ice Age began. The Ice Age was a long period of time in which four great glaciers (冰川) pushed southward to cover almost all the upper half of North America, and then melted away. Each glacier was a thick sheet of ice and snow that spread out from a center near what is now Hudson Bay in Canada. The winters were long, and the cool summers were too short to

melt much of the ice and snow. The ever-growing sheet built up to a thickness of two miles at its center.

As all glaciers do, these great glaciers slid (滑动). They pushed down giant trees in their paths and scraped (刮削) the earth bare (光秃秃的) of soil. Many animals moved farther south to escape. Others stayed and were destroyed.

When winters of little snow came, the summer suns cut into the edges of the ice sheets. As the glaciers melted, rocks, soil and other things that had mixed with the ice and snow were left. New hills, lakes and rivers were formed.

The last of the great glaciers began its melting about 11,000 years ago. Its melting formed the Great Lakes. These lakes are today little changed from their early sizes and shapes. The largest of the North American river systems was also influenced by the glaciers. This is the Mississippi-Missouri-Ohio system. These rivers were miles wide at first. Through the years they settled into their present channels. 56. The main idea of this passage is ________. A. the Ice Age was a long period of time

B. great glaciers covered North America many years ago C. changes in climate helped to melt the glaciers D. how glaciers changed North America

57. From the information in this passage we know that ________. A. glaciers are destructive B. all glaciers in the world move southward

C. the Mississippi-Missouri-Ohio system is larger than it was before the Ice Age D. the Great Lakes are now smaller than they were before the Ice Age 58. The Ice Age lasted almost ________.

A. 1,000 years B. 100 years C. 1,000,000 years D. 11,000 years 59. In the last sentence, the word their refers to ________. A. lakes B. rivers C. glaciers

Can people change their skin colour without suffering like pop king Michael Jackson? Perhaps yes. Scientists have found the gene that determines skin colour.

The gene comes in two versions, one of which is found in 99 per cent of Europeans. The other is found in 93 to 100 per cent of Africans, researchers at Pennsylvania State University report in the latest issue of Science.

Scientists have changed the colour of a dark-striped zebrafish to uniform gold by inserting a version of the pigment(色素) gene into a young fish. As with humans, zebrafish skin colour is determined by pigment cells, which contain melanosomes(黑色素). The number, size and darkness of melanosomes per pigment cell determines skin colour.

It appears that, like the golden zebrafish, light-skinned Europeans also have a mutation(变异) in the gene for melanosome production. This results in less pigmented skin.

第 6 页 共 15 页

D. systems

However, Keith Cheng, leader of the research team, points out that the mutation is different in human and zebrafish genes.

Humans acquired dark skin in Africa about 1.5 million years ago to protect bodies from ultra-violet rays of the sun(太阳光紫外线), which can cause skin cancer.

But when modern humans leave Africa to live in northern latitudes, they need more sunlight on their skin to produce vitamin D. So the related gene changes, according to Cheng.

Asians have the same version of the gene as Africans, so they probably acquired their light skin through the action of some other gene that affects skin colour, said Cheng.

The new discovery could lead to medical treatments for skin cancer. It also could lead to research into ways to change skin colour without damaging it like chemical treatment did on Michael Jackson. 60. The passage mainly tells us that ________.

A. people can not change their skin colour without any pain

B. the new discovery could lead to research into ways to change skin colour safely C. pop king Michael Jackson often changed his skin colour as he liked D. scientists have found the gene people‘s skin colour is determined by 61. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A. nowadays people who want to change their skin colour have to suffer a lot from the damage

caused by the chemical treatment B. Europeans and Africans have the same gene

C. the new discovery could help to find medical treatments for skin cancer D. there are two kinds of genes

62. The reason why Europeans are light-skinned is probably that ________. A. they are born light-skinned people

B. light-skinned Europeans have mutation in the gen for melanosome production C. they have fewer activities outside

D. they pay much attention to protecting their skin 63. The writer‘s attitude towards the discovery is ________. A. neutral (中立的)

B. negative

Sports 1: Basketball We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game. Sports 2: Gym We will be using St. Peter‘s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00pm. Second, it has lots of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, shipping, jogging, outdoor aerobics(有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities. Sports3: Hiking Hiking(远足)will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr. Sports 4;Swimming The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the going-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i. e. 2:45pm to 3:45 pm). Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two life guards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit. 64. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Students selecting basketball had better register early. B. In the US and Britain, the slogan around colleges was ―Save water. Shower with a friend.‖ Now, Wuhan University has come up with another system for the campus bathhouse. It charges students for the amount of time in a shower. Before entering the bathhouse, students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower with cash or their student ID card. The clock starts ticking the minute the tape is turned on. It pauses when a button is pressed for soap. An integrated circuit(IC) card reader at each tap shows the time. No money, no water. The benefits of the new system can be seen with the old system, which charged 1 yuan for each person regardless of time in the shower. The university used about 320 tones of water daily under the old system, but only 160 tons now.

Many students use the new system but opinions on it are divided. Some students say it is bad because bathing had become a sort of race. Many people using it for the first time are not sure how long they need to shower. Some might be embarrassed if their time is up and they‘re still covered in soap. They have to ask the bathhouse worker to help them buy extra time.

―It‘s a flaw in the system that you can not buy extra time on the ID card,‖ said Ren, a freshman in Wuhan University. The university is also considering some students‘ suggestions that they be allowed to pay after they‘ve finished the shower. Not surprisingly, some are complaining about losing the hour shower. But many students say the move helps them develop a water-saving sense.

Without the time limits, most students tended to shower for 30 to an hour in the bathhouse. Some even used the hot water to wash their clothes. ―In my experience, 10-20 minutes is enough,‖ said Dai Zhihua, a third-year student who usually takes 8 minutes.

A similar system has been installed in other universities. Shanghai Normal University introduced it at its Fengxiang Campus in September. The bathing fee there is 0.2 yuan per minute. One male student responded by setting a record with a two-minute shower. 68. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true? A. Students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower.

B. The clock times all through while the student is bathing except when the bather paused for soap. C. If money runs out, there will be no water.

D. Having finished bathing, the student has to pay for it. 69. It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A. the new operation can solve the water crisis.

B. The new operation can raise students‘ environmental awareness. C. a similar operation has been set in other universities.

D. the university used about 320 tones of water daily under the old system, but only 160 tons now. 70. In which column can you find this passage?

A. People. B. Society. C. Campus Life. D. Lifestyle.

The earth's ocean can reach a depth of up to 11,000 metres. That is deep enough to cover Mount Qomolangma! Marine (海洋的) scientists divide the oceans into five zones. Each zone is different mainly as a result of how much sunlight reaches it.

Most of the life in the ocean can be found in the first zone, which begins at the surface and goes down to about 200 metres. Because there is sunlight at this level, plants are able to grow. Marine animals such as dolphins, sharks, sea turtles and sea lions, and of course a variety of fish, live in the sunlight part of the ocean. It is difficult to hide from other animals in the area, but many species have adapted by becoming dark on the top and light on the bottom. This makes it hard to see them against the dark water below and the blue sky above.

The second starts at 200 metres and goes down to about 1,000 metres. Some sunlight can reach this level, but it is not enough for plants to grow. Because this zone is relatively dark, many of the creatures that live here are able to make light with their body. The light from these animals makes the water look like a sky with moving stars in it.

The third zone is dark. This place, about 3,000 metres deep, may not seem a likely habitat (栖息地), but there are more creatures here than one might think. Most of the animals that live here are black or red because of the lack of light. At this depth, a slow shower of what looks like snow is falling. This phenomenon, called \"marine snowhe ocean. It is source of food for the creatures that live in the deep.

Below 4,000 metres, the temperature is near freezing and there is no light at all. In fact, the zone is so dark and empty that scientists name this zone after the Greek word for \"no bottom\". There is not much life to be found in this cold and unpleasant part. But some creatures manage to survive here despite the high water pressure.

The very deepest part of the ocean is 2,000 metres further down. At this depth, the water pressure is extremely high and life is very difficult for the few creatures that live here. Compared to the other zones, this one has very little life. Since there is no light here, some animals don't have eyes. When scientists explored the very deepest parts of the ocean, they did not expect to find any life at all. It turned out that there are creatures as far down as 10,000 metres. They usually survive by living close to deep sea vents, \"chimneys\" that send out gases from within the earth.

As you can see, the environment around us is getting worse and worse. First, global warming is becoming greatly serious, which is a danger to me and can also severely affect your health. Meanwhile, environmental pollution also occurs as a result of your improper activities, such as industrial waste, plastic bags and so on. Worse still, natural resources, for example, water and oil, are being used up. You will some day destroy the planet you live on if you continue in this way.

Ways are really needed to solve these problems and here are some practical things you can do. Firstly, what you should do is that you must plant trees as many as possible, because they can take in carbon dioxide so that global warming can be postponed. Secondly, forming the habit of recycling and reusing can stop the build-up of waste. For example, use recycled paper at home and office if possible. Lastly, you may as well not use plastic bags, ones that pollute the Earth most.

As a consequence, you should call on more and more people to give a helping hand and take action right away for you and me! Yours sincerely Earth

W: I guess that is why normal people like us love going to the movies so much…it‘s a chance to escape the troubles of life and live in a world where everything always turns out for the best. M: What‘s wrong with a little bit of positive thinking and happy endings? W: Nothing at all. I was just thinking out loud.

M: You‘re right, though. It has been a long time since I saw a movie in a theater that actually inspired me like all those old classics do.

Text 8 W: You look sleepy.

M: Yes. I didn‘t go to bed until 2 o‘clock in the morning. W: Why?

M: I was sitting at the computer. W: Were you making friends online? M: Yes. How did you know that?

W: Everyone knows you are crazy about making friends online. M: Really?

W: However, I must say that making friends online is a waste of time. And it‘s not real. M: Maybe you are right, but it‘s very interesting. W: That‘s why you cannot stop?

M: Partly. But the most important reason is that I can practise my English when I am chatting online with friends. W: Are you serious?

M: You‘d better believe it. Will you come to my house tonight? I‘ll show you how. W: Thanks, anyway. Sleeping is more important for me. I must get up early tomorrow. M: Poor you.

W: I suggest you spend less time making friends online. There are lots of more important things to do, right? M: I know. But just let me be myself.

Text 9 W: So what do you think was the best part? M: The part where I said ―I do‖, of course. W: Haha, I knew you would say that.

M: Actually, I really like it when your parents give their speeches. I have never really seen them express any emotion before, but their words almost made me cry, especially your Dad‘s.

W: Well, it was a really special day for them. They think you and your parents are just great, and it makes the celebration that much better when you think about it as gaining a new family.

M: I couldn‘t agree more. And it was so amazing to have all my friends together. I think everyone had a wonderful time. W: The food turned out pretty decent, huh?

M: It sure did. You never know how these things will go with so many people to feed, but I think everyone was pleased. The cake was a bit of disappointment, though.

W: Yeah, but nobody ever actually likes the cake. I mean, it‘s really only there to be used as face paint for the bride and groom! M: Well, you sure got me good! And you know what? I had forgotten what a good dancer you are. It had been a long time since we cut a rug together. I think that was when everything truly sank in – that you were going to be Mrs Kyle Daniels forever.

W: Um, you mean that you were going to be Mr. Sally Washington forever…

Text10 In recent years, India has gone through some very big changes. More and more foreign companies are investing in the country. And more and more local companies are growing into world leaders. Indeed, India is quickly becoming one of the word‘s biggest economies.

Since 1994, India‘s economy has grown at around 7% per year. In 2007, it was already the world‘s 10 the largest. Many people think it will keep rising, to 3rd or 4th place within 20 years.

India has several key advantages. First, it has a large and young population, so the country has no problem finding workers for all kinds of jobs. Second, India has a strong service sector. In the areas like software and communications, it‘s getting stronger and stronger. Third, English is one of the country‘s national languages. That‘s a big help when doing business overseas.

However, India is also dealing with many problems. About 20% of the people are poor. Plus, a lot needs to be done to improve education and healthcare. These problems are especially big in rural areas.

Over the next few decades, India will have to come up with answers to these problems. If it can, and if its economy keeps growing, we‘ll definitely hear a lot more about the country in the coming years.
