We do Need English
Given the context of economic globalization, we cannot deny the fact that English is highly meaningful in international cooperation and exchange as well as in personal development.
Firstly, English language is of crucial importance in international cooperation and exchange. In the current world, no nation could possibly survive without any contact with other countries. Transnational cooperation in business, production, cultural exchanges, education and environmental protection and so on has well become the norm of every single day. And throughout all the interactions, English, as a global language, is playing an indispensable role. English is spoken as an. official language in more than 80 countries and it also functions as working language in the UN. Two thirds of the world trade is conducted in English. Since China adopted opening-up policy in late 1970s, especially after the accession into WTO, China has inevitably become a member of the global village. To perform our
duties and enjoy our interests as a significant member of the international community, we do need English by all means. Actually the remarkable economic development in China in the past two decades is to a great extent due to the efforts of competent individuals who possess desirable knowledge of foreign languages, English in particular.
Secondly, English is needed in our career development. The fact that English score is a must in many a qualification test proves that various institutions have paid close attention to their employees English proficiency. This move is easily understandable because workers with the adequate English knowledge are needed in international exchanges and because English cannot be acquired overnight. Even in many developed countries, students are required to take up two or three foreign languages, the reason being that they are well aware that such a competence may become handy some day. As a developing country, China has a great deal to learn from other countries. In order to arrive at that objective, we definitely need English as a facilitative tool.
Thirdly, English is significant in regard to one's personal development. English is compulsory in elementary, secondary and tertiary education. One will have to pass English tests to climb the educational ladder. Even though you practice self-study, English will invariably usher you into a wonderland of enchanting literacy. Some people complain that we have invested too much time and energy on English. It may be true, but obviously it is not English to be blamed. Perhaps we should reexamine our teaching methods in an attempt to boost English teaching and learning efficiency.
To sum up, with the rapid advancement of economic and cultural globalization, English has become more and more indispensable in international affairs, career climbing, and personal development. There is no point in denying the significance of English.

Second Thought on English Fever
It is said that a total of 300 million people are taking various English courses in China. Billions of dollars are invested in English education in spite of a tight budget for the nation's education in general. Personally I do not see the rationale for such unthinkable endeavour and enormous financial input.
First, English plays an unduly important role in our society. In current college entrance examination, English, math and Chinese are compulsory to all examinees. Consequently these three subjects mean significantly much more than other courses for secondary school students. But to what extent is such policy well based? College teachers frequently complain about their students' inadequate knowledge of science, history, geography, literature, to name just a few. Students might be misguided that those subjects are not as meaningful as English. Yet they will be frustrated when they come to realize that those subjects do count in their later pursuit in the university. It is not rare that a doctor's English proficiency instead of his or her medical know- how is tested when an evaluation is needed for the sake of their career development. English is undoubtedly useful for a doctor, but what is
more important for them? It is high time that we gave a second thought to English fever and the colossal input in English.
Second, we do not need English that much in daily communication. When we turn on the TV or radio, the overwhelming majority of programs are in our mother tongue-Chinese. When conversing with people in the street, it is odd for us to pick up English. As a foreign language, English is far from a language for our daily communication. And it bears proof that English merely serves as lingua franca in regard to exchange with people from overseas and that English remains a school course on campus rather than a sheer necessity for everyday communication.
Third, we are in need of a large number of qualified technicians rather than English speakers to fuel the economic advancement. China, as a developing country, still lags behind many a developed nation in domains like education, agriculture, telecommunication, space science, national defense and hosts of others. To catch up with the latest development in the world, we are in desperate need of first-class scientists, engineers, and researchers. If the investment in English fever had been spent in boosting scientific and technological progress, faster growth in economy would have been expected. English does have a role to play, nonetheless other concerns are understandably more urgent.
All in all, it seems that we have paid too much attention to English, but English does not prove to be that much needed in daily life and social development. Therefore, we are advised to re-examine our policy and attitude towards English in the society.)
