二.阅读理解(6个阅读理解,30个小题,每小题1.5分,共45分.有下划线的部分是需要翻译的)

阅读1. The old fashioned general store is fast disappearing. This is, perhaps, a pity, because shopping today seems to lack that personal element which existed when the shopkeeper knew all his regular customers personally. He could, for instance, remember which brand of tea Mrs. Smith usually bought or what sort of washing powder Mrs. Jones preferred. Not only was the shop a center of buying and selling, but a social meeting place.

A prosperous(繁荣的) general store might have employed four or five assistants, and so

there were very few problems in management as far as the staff (全体职员) was concerned. But now that the supermarket has replaced the general store, the job of the manager has changed completely. The modern supermarket manager has to cope with a staff of as many as a hundred, apart from all the other everyday problems of running a large business.

Every morning the manager must, like the commander of an army division, carry out an inspection of his store to make sure that everything is ready for the business of the day. He must see that everything is running smoothly. He will have to give advice and make decisions as problems arise; and he must know how to get his huge staff to work efficiently with their respective responsibilities. No matter what he has to do throughout the day, however, the supermarket manager must be ready for any emergency that may arise. They say in the trade that you are not really an experienced supermarket manager until you have dealt with a flood, a fire, a birth and a death in your store.

1.The main purpose of the passage is to show ______.

A.how the supermarket has replaced the old general store

In some urban centers, workaholism is so common that people do not consider it unusual:

They accept the lifestyle as normal. Government workers in Washington D.C, for example, frequently work sixty to seventy hours a week. They don’t do this because they have to; they do it because they want to.

Workaholism can be a serious problem. Because true workaholics would rather work than do anything else, they probably don’t know how to relax.

Is workaholism always dangerous? Perhaps not. There are, certainly, people who work well under stress. Some studies show that many workaholies have great energy and interest in life. Their work is so pleasurable that they are actually very happy. For most workaholics, work and entertainment keep them busy and creative.

Why do workaholics enjoy their jobs so much? There are several advantages to work. Of course, it provides people with paychecks, and this is important. But it offers more than

financial security. It provides people with selfconfidence; they have a feeling of satisfaction when they’re produced a challenging piece of work and are able to say,“I made that.” Psychologists claim that work gives people an identity through participation in work, they get a sense of self and individualism. In addition, most jobs provide people with a socially acceptable way to meet others. Perhaps some people are compulsive about their work, but their addiction seems to be a safe-even an advantageous-one.

五.作文写作(20分)

题目:Be True to Your Word-要言而有信

范文:

One of our ancient philosophers said, \"If one does not keep his word, others will keep avoiding him.\" The Chinese people have always held this idea to be one of their standards of morality.

When one is as good as his word, he will win confidence of people and make a lot of friends. And as we all know, friendship may give us joy, help, support whenever we need them. And when we enjoy the pleasure of being trusted, respected and loved by others, we will urge ourselves to be ever honest in society, ever helpful to others, and ever ready to do our bit for a better tomorrow of mankind.

Since we can gain so much when we are sincere in what we have said and promised, let's be true in word and resolute in deed anytime and anywhere.

二.阅读理解

Anne Whitney, a sophomore at Colorado State University, first had a problem taking tests when she began college. \"I was always well prepared for my tests. Sometimes I studied

for weeks before a test. Yet I would go in to take the test, only to find I could not answer the questions correctly. Would you blank out because of nervousness and fear. I couldn’t think of the answer. My low grades on the tests did not show what I knew to the teacher.\" Another student in microbiology had similar experiences. He said, \"My first chemistry test was very difficult. Then, on the second test, I sat down to take it, and I was so nervous that I was shaking. My hands were moving up and down so quickly that it was hard to hold my pencil. I knew the material and I knew the answers. Yet I couldn’t even write them down!\"

These two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. Because a student worries and it uneasy about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student can’t write or think clearly because of the extreme tension and nervousness. Although poor grades are often a result of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades. Recently, test anxiety had been recognized as a real problem, not just an excuse or a false explanation of lazy students.

Special university counseling courses try to help students. In these courses, counselors try to help students by teaching them how to manage test anxiety. At some universities, students take tests to measure their anxiety. If the tests show their anxiety is high, the students can take short courses to help them deal with their tension. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. Students are trained to become calm in very tense situations. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work at ease .Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.

An expert at the University of California explains. With almost all students, relaxation and less stress are felt after taking out program. Most of then experience better control during their tests. Almost all have some improvement. With some, the improvement is very great.

二、阅读理解

Good sense is the most equitable distributed (divide) thing in the world , for each man considers himself so well provided with it that even those who are most difficult to satisfy in everything else do not usually wish to have more of it than they have already. It is not likely that everyone is mistaken in this; it shows, rather, that the ability to judge rightly and separate the true from the false, which is essentially what is called good sense or reason (很强的判断力), is by nature (生来)equal in all men, and thus that our opinions differ not because some men are better endowed with(获得的判断力)reason than others, but only because we direct our thoughts along different paths, and do not consider the same things, for it is not enough to have a good mind: what is most important is to apply it rightly. The greatest souls are capable of the greatest vices; and those who walk very slowly can advance much further, if they always keep to the direct road, than those who run and go astray (误入迷途).

For my part, I have never presumed my mind to be more perfect than average in any way; I have, in fact, often wished that my thoughts were as quick, or my imagination as precise and distinct, or my memory as capacious or prompt, as those of some other men.

And I know of no other qualities than these which make for the perfection of the mind; for as to reason, or good sense, inasmuch as it alone makes us men and distinguishes us from the beasts(animals), I am quite willing to believe that is whole and entire in each of us, and to follow in the common opinion of the philosophers who say that there are differences of more

or less only among the accidents, and not among the forms, or natures, of the individuals of a single species.

1、According to the author, the three elements that comprise the perfect mind are ____

A.Tenacity(固执)of thought, capacious memory, quickness of mind

B.precise imagination, tenacity of memory, quickness of thought

C.quickness of wit, ease of conscience, quickness of thought

D.promptness of memory, distinctness of imagination, quickness of thought

2、The basic idea of the first paragraph may be stated as follows: _____

A.all persons have an equal portion of good will when they are born

B.great souls are capable of great evil

C. good sense, in terms of its distribution among persons, may be called common sense

D.good sense is the mark of the truly good person

3、About himself, the author states that _____

A.he had always sensed his mental superiority over most persons

B.his awareness of his mental superiority over other was something that grew slowly, with experience

C.he actually regards his own mental faculties as inferior in many ways to those of the great majority of persons.

D.he has never had the feeling that his mind was more perfect than average in any way

4、The author claims that what sets human beings apart from beasts is _____.

A.a sense of organization combines with the ability to create

B.the ability to adapt to the surroundings

C.a sense of reason coupled with a strong sense of practicality

D.a sense or reason

5、According to the author the ability to distinguish between the true and the false is ____.

A.endowed by nature to all creatures

B.endowed in equal measure to all people

C.more heavily present in some people that in others

D. an unnatural, cultivated trait in all people

参考答案:1.D 2.C 3.D 4.D 5.B

In the 1960s, medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Negative events like “serious illness of a family member” were high on the list, but so were some positive life-changing events, like marriage. When you take the Holmes-Rahe test you must remember that the score does not reflect how you deal with stress — it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you handle these events dramatically affects your chances of staying healthy.

By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow, the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women’s magazines ran headlines like “Stress causes illness!” If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy, the articles said, avoid stressful events.

But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous, many — like the death of a loved one — are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (处方) for staying away from opportunities as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move.

The notion that all stress makes you sick also ignores a lot of what we know about people. It assumes we’re all vulnerable (脆弱的) and passive in the face of adversity (逆境). But what about human initiative and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental vigor than they had before. We also know that a long time without

change or challenge can lead to boredom, and physical and metal strain.

1. The result of Holmes-Rahe’s medical research tells us __________.

A) the way you handle major events may cause stress

B) what should be done to avoid stress

C) what kind of event would cause stress

D) how to cope with sudden changes in life

2. The studies on stress in the early 1970’s led to _________.

A) widespread concern over its harmful effects

B) great panic over the mental disorder it could cause

C) an intensive research into stress-related illnesses

D) popular avoidance of stressful jobs

3. The score of the Holmes-Rahe test shows ________.

A) how much pressure you are under

B) how positive events can change your life

C) how stressful a major event can be

D) how you can deal with life-changing events

4. Why is “such simplistic advice” (Line 1, Para. 3) impossible to follow?

A) No one can stay on the same job for long.

B) No prescription is effective in relieving stress.

C) People have to get married someday.

D) You could be missing opportunities as well.

5. According to the passage people who have experienced ups and downs may become ________.

A) nervous when faced with difficulties

B) physically and mentally strained

C) more capable of coping with adversity

D) indifferent toward what happens to them

答案 1. C 2. A 3. A 4. D 5. C

city transportation

1.交通日益成为城市的一大难题

2.现有解决交通问题的办法

3.提出自己的看法

[范文1]

There is no doubt that traffic congestion becomes a growing worry for the residents of most urban areas. Some major roads are regularly choked with traffic in rush hours. The limited transport capacity contributes largely to the vexing problem. How to solve the headache?

The existing solutions to traffic jam mainly aims at creating metro bus systems and broadening major roads. Widening the existing roads can solve traffic snarls on some level. Soaring car ownership compounds the chronic annoying problem, so we must sharply reduce the heavy reliance on cars and drive a shift to the mass transportation. It is a cheap and good way. We can create a system of customized bus routes and highlight the

development of subways, trolleys and light rail. The effective combination of these solutions will enable the urban areas to possess a smooth traffic.

[范文2]

With the development of industry and economy, more people from rural area are pouring into big cities and more vehicles are going on to the street. As a result, many cities are faced with the serious problem of traffic congestion, which has become one of the major concerns of the society.

To solve this problem, many people have put forward many solutions, of which the following two are the most typical. One is to lay down more roads, which will make the highways less crowded and accelerate the flowof traffic. Another is to open up more bus routes, which will enable more people to take buses rather than ride bikes or drive cars, thus decreasing the number of cars and bikes racing on the streets.

However, both of the suggestions have disadvantages. The former may occupy too much land, which may be otherwise put to better uses. The latter, on the other hand, will bring inconvenience to those who are living far away from the bus routes. The best solution, in my opinion, seems to be the combination of the two: toay down more roads in spacious areas and to open up more bus routes in downtown areas.

[范文3]

Nowadays, people in many big cities are complaining about the heavy traffic. It has seriously influenced people's daily life and economic development. To solve the problem,

some pieces of advice are put forward. Some people suggest that more streets and roads should be built. In this way,

the traffic density can be redncedi hence speeding up the flow of buses and cars. But the new roads and streets will be filled with many cars and buses soon.

Some people advise to limit the number of bikes and cars. This can decrease the traffic flow. But on the other haad, this will affect the consumption and make buses more crowded.

In my opinion, the number of private cars should be put under control. And at the same time, buses should have their own special routes which cannot be used by other vehicles. Besides, underground train and city train should be developed quickly. ( 151 words)

Part II Reading Comprehension (40 points)

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.

Passage One(734082296)

Americans this year will swallow 15, 000 tons of aspirin, one of the safest and most effective drugs invented by man. As the most popular medicine in the world today, it is an effective pain reliever. Its bad effects are relatively mild, and it is cheap.

Although aspirin was first sold by a German company in 1899, it has been around much longer than that. Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, understood the medical value of the leaves and tree bark which today are known to contain salicylates, the chemical in aspirin. During the 19th century there was a great deal of experimentation in Europe with this chemical, and it led to the introduction of aspirin. By 19l5, aspirin tablets(片剂) were available in the United

States.

For millions of people suffering from arthritis, aspirin is the only thing that works. A small quantity of aspirin (two five-grain tablets) relieves pain and inflammation. It also reduces fever by interfering with some of the body's reactions. Aspirin, in short, is truly the 20th-century wonder drug. On the other hand, it is also the second largest suicide drug and is the leading cause of poisoning among children. It has side effects that, although relatively mild, are largely unrecognized among users.

Aspirin is very irritating to the stomach lining, and many aspirin takers complain about upset stomach. There is a right way and a wrong way to take aspirin. The best way is to chew the tablets before swallowing them with water, but few people can stand the bitter taste. Some people suggest crushing the tablets in milk or orange juice and drinking that.

16. This article discusses __________.

A. the multiple functions of aspirin

B. how and why aspirin was invented

C. the history and the features of aspirin

D. how to take aspirin properly

17. According to the second paragraph, salicylates is __________.

A. leaves and tree barks

B. the old name of aspirin

C. the name of a US company

D. a component of aspirin

18. Which symptom can NOT be treated by aspirin?

A. fever B. reactions C. pain D. inflammation

19. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the best way to take aspirin is to take it __________.

A. with bitter water

B. with orange juice

C. in tablet form

D. in powder form

20. The author of this article seems to be__________.

A. against the use of aspirin

B. in favour of aspirin

C. doubtful about aspirin

D. not interested in aspirin

Passage Two(734082296)

Dr. Mary Jo Bane is the associate director of the Center for Research on Women. Her recent study found “surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life”, which cast doubt on some common myths about American family.

Myth 1: The American Family is Dying Because of the Soaring Divorce Rate.

According to Dr. Bane’s study, the American family is changing, not dying. It is becoming smaller and the divorce rate is high. But Dr. Bane says that despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people re-marry, but only 2%marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up.

Myth 2: Working Mothers are Destroying the Family by Neglecting Their Children.

“There’s no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home,” says Dr. Bane. “You have to divide the time into different categories: simple physical function and educational time or development time when a mother plays with the child. So far we haven’t seen the amount of educational or development time vary much, whether or not the mother works outside the home.” In fact, Dr. Bane finds evidence that working mothers, especially in the middle class,

try to compensate for working by setting aside time exclusively for their children. “They probably read more to their children and spend more time in planned activities with them than nonworking mothers do.” says Dr. Bane.

21. Dr. Mary Jo Bane’s study seems to suggest that _________.

A. Americans are persistent in career

B. Americans are serious with their families

C. American families are all breaking up

D. American families are perfect as usual

22. It can be inferred that the common myths of American family consider family life to be _________.

A. in great danger

B. quite wonderful

C. changing too fast

D. very satisfying

23. According to the article, which of the following is true about marriage and divorce?

A. Divorced people never consider a second marriage.

B. Teenage couples often divorce out of no reason.

C. Less and less people plan to get married.

D. Very few people have a third or fourth marriage.

24. For the children whose mothers go out to work, __________.

A. it is better to have mothers at home

B. almost no attention is paid to them

C. no less attention is paid to them

D. a lot of time is spent playing games

25.Compared with nonworking mothers, working mothers________.

A. spare less time to stay with their children

B. do more educational activities with children

C. do very little simple physical housework

D. avoid disturbing their work by family duties

Passage Three(734082296)

Crime has its own cycles, a magazine reported some years ago. Police records that were studied for five years from over 2,400 cities and towns show a surprising link between changes in the season and crime patterns in UK.

The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years. Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do rape and other violent attacks. Murder, moreover, is more than seasonal: it is a weekend crime. It is also a nighttime crime: 62 percent of murders are committed between 6 p. m. and 6 a. m.

Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, burglary has a different cycle. You are most likely to be robbed between 6 p. m. and 2 a. m. on a Saturday night in December, January or February. The most uncriminal month of all is May; however, more dog bites are reported in this month than in any other month of the year.

On the other hand, our intellectual seasonal cycles are completely different from our criminal tendencies. Professor Huntington, of the Foundation for the Study of Cycles, made extensive studies to discover the seasons when people read serious books, attend scientific meetings, make the highest scores on examinations, and propose the most changes to patents. In all instances, he found a spring peak and an autumn peak separated by a summer low. On the other hand, Professor Huntington's studies indicated that June is the peak month for suicides and admissions to mental hospitals. June is also a peak month for marriages!

26. The seasonal cycle of crime patterns is proved by_________.

A. the figures in police records

B. 2,400 cities and towns

C. a magazine report

D. the studies by police officers

27. According to paragraph 2, a murder would most possibly occur on _________.

A. a weekday morning in spring

B. a weekday morning in autumn

C. a weekend night in summer

D. a weekend night in winter

28. What makes May a special month of the year?

A. All types of crimes happen in May.

B. There is no crime happened in May.

C. Criminals increase in number in May.

D. Dog attacks are most frequent in May.

29. Which behavior is NOT an example of human intellectual activities?

A. Reading books on philosophy.

B. Attending wedding ceremony.

C. Working on mathematics questions.

D. Innovating engineering machinery.

30. According to Professor Huntington’s study, June is the peak month when people _________.

A. get divorced

B. recover from mental illness

C. try to kill themselves

D. climb high and low mountains

Passage Four(734082296)

In Lusaka, Zambia, a young man applying for a job was told to see the manager. He leaned over the receptionist’s desk and asked. “What tribe(部落) is he?” When the receptionist told him that the manager was a Mashona, the applicant replied, “Then I'll never get the job.”

This phenomenon is called tribalism(部落主义). There are more than 2,000 tribes in black Africa. Each has its own language, customs, and physical characteristics that make its members almost immediately recognizable to a person from another tribe. To the Westerner, tribalism is one of the most difficult of African customs to understand. It makes many people think of savagery, warfare, or old-fashioned customs.

However, to most Africans, tribalism simply means very strong loyalty to one’s ethnic group. It is a force that can be both good and bad. By definition tribalism means sharing among members of the extended family. It makes sure that a person is taken care of by his own group tribesman. To give a job to a fellow is not wrong; it is an obligation. Similarly, for a politician or military leader, it is considered good common sense to choose his closest advisers from people of his own tribe. This ensures security, continuity, and authority. Tribal loyalty may mean a quick promotion—from sergeant to captain, from clerk to manager—within a very short time.

Modern African politicians publicly speak out against tribal divisions. Yet it remains perhaps the most powerful force in day-to-day African life.

31. In paragraph 1, why did the young man believe his job application will be refused?

A. His behavior was not appropriate.

B. He belonged to the same tribe with the manager.

C. He didn’t belong to the same tribe with the manager.

D. His questions annoyed the receptionist.

32. The situation in the first paragraph is an example of_______.

A. the difficulty of getting a job in Africa

B. the disagreement on tribalism among Africans

C. the great numbers of tribes in Africa

D. the importance of tribalism in Africa

33. What might be the common attitudes of Westerners towards tribalism?

A. positive

B. indifferent

C. negative

D. none of the above

34. According to the article, which of the following is NOT an evidence of tribalism?

A. Sergeants maintain security in his own tribe.

B.Politicians choose men from his own tribe as intimate advisers.

C. Military leaders promote fellow tribesmen to higher positions.

D. Managers give jobs to fellow tribesmen.

35. What would be the future of tribalism?

A. It will soon be destroyed by modern politicians.

B. It will remain as strong as it is today and never be changed.

C. It will gradually disappear as the society develops.

D. It will speed up further division of tribes.

英语试卷二(734082296) 参考作文(734082296)

Some people prefer reading electronic books because it is cheap and convenient. An ordinary computer or e-book reader can hold hundreds or thousands of books. One may

read them whenever and wherever he is, without a heavy load.

There are also some other people who still enjoy reading paper books. For them, turning the paper pages and reading the printed lines are the most comfortable way of reading. One of their reasons is that E-books make their eyes go tired easily.

If I were given the choice, I would very likely choose e-books, because the computer software is so advanced now that more work could be done while reading, such as taking long notes or copying beautiful sentences in seconds. These functions could not be fulfilled so efficiently with paper and pens. (131 words) (734082296)
