[Class 40 (v)] In a receiverembodying a thermionic amplifying stage provided with automatic gain controlarrangements, a rectifier adapted to limit the signal applied to the amplifying stage isprovided and so arranged as not to be adversely affected by the action of the gaincontrolling voltage. The Figure shows an arrangement in which the limiter D is connectedto the grid of the amplifier through a blocking condenser C5 and the gain control voltageis applied through a resistance R1. As shown, the limiter is in parallel with the tuned inputcircuit and in series with a source of biassing potential. Alternatively, the bias may bederived from the cathode resistance R2 so that the automatic gain control serves toaugment the action of the limiting means. Instead of a diode a copper oxide or seleniumrectifier may be used.
