A forest fire that burned 55 square kilometres was finally put out on Wednesday morning. The fire started on Sunday in Black Bear State Park and quickly spread to nearby areas.
On Monday, police evacuated(疏散)the small town of Lawson and ordered the people to leave their homes. The fire destroyed 20 homes in the area and caused heavy damage to 40 others.
Nobody was hurt. Officials said the damage to homes and cars was between $l million and $2 million. The government declared the town a disaster area. The fire spread quickly in the hot, dry weather. Fire fighting was difficult because of strong winds. Firemen from 55 fire departments in the state joined the National Fire Service to put out the fire. Some kept fighting for 24 hours. Fire engines and helicopters dropped water onto the fire. In order to control the fire, firemen cleared a way around the fire. Police closed King Road to traffic on Tuesday because of heavy smoke. Thousands of tourists had to drive an hour north to Queen Road to pass the fire area.
Some people did not follow the police order. Paul Grayson sent his wife and
two children to safety, but he stayed. As the fire came within 50 feet of his house, he started thinking, “Am I foolish? Did I stay here too long, just for a house?”

Have you ever asked your relatives or friends if there is Wi-Fi in their houses? Have you ever searched for Wi-Fi when you are at restaurants or hotels? The answers will probably be \"Yes\". Most of us want Wi-Fi everywhere as if we can't live without it. But we can only use free Wi-Fi in some public places. We still have to spend some money accessing (连接)the Internet at most time. Here comes a piece of good news.
A rich, powerful organiza tion in the USA called the Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) has decided to change the age of online computing (计算) completely by giving free Wi-Fi to every person on Earth. They will send up hundreds of satellites into low Earth orbit(轨道)in 2015.
This is because they have made a survey and found that only 60% of the world's population have been able to get information on the Internet. And this is
also because many countries are unable to offer people the necessary infrastructure(基础设施)to access the web.
We can expect to use free Wi-Fi everywhere in the near future.

Taking care of ourselves
This kind of system can
remind carers (护理员) through
a screen on a wall. The device
(装置) sends carers tasks, for
example, when the patients need
to take medicine. It can even
tell carers if there’s any unusual
activity in the home that could
cause problems to patients. Most of us must have been under this situation. You re on the way to meeting your friends
when you suddenly ask yourself, “Did I remember to turn off the lights?” For those with “smart homes (智能家居)”, however, this wouldn't be a problem.
Over the past few years, smart homes have become popular. Thanks to user-friendly smart
products(产品), people can control nearly every electrical item (电器) in their homes from
anywhere in the world. For example, all of our lights can be controlled through our phones and
computers. Our TV is controllable too.
While smart homes aren't new, companies like Philips, Amazon and Xiaomi have brought more
automation(自动化) to them with new products. The smart home system(系统) really has many meaningful uses which make life much easier.
So, for those who have already “gone smart”, will it ever be possible to go back to do things in the
old way? It would be like going back to a world without mobile phones. Maybe possible, but quite
difficult.
96. How can people control the electrical items in their homes far away?
Saving energy & money It is clear that this kind of system can be used to save energy. It also saves money. In Norway, it costs 1 million kroner (0. 79 million yuan) per
year to support someone in a
care home, while this system
costs only 15,000 kroner a
year.
97. What does the underlined word “them” refer to (指代)?
98. What do the two short passages in the boxes introduce?
99. Whom does the system mentioned in the box at the top-left corner mainly help?
100.What does the writer think of the smart home system?
96. By using user-friendly smart products.
97. Smart homes.
98. Two kinds of smart system.
99. Some patients/carers.
100. Really meaningful.

“I sometimes get up at three or four in the morning to surf the Internet.”
“I check my e-mail almost forty times a day.”
“I seldom spend less than three hours each time on the net.”
“I spend more time in chat rooms than with my ‘real-life’ friends.”
Do you know any people like these? They are part of a new addiction(瘾) called Internet addiction. According to experts, Internet addicts(迷) spend at least thirty to forty hours online every week. They lose control of the time they spend on the Internet.
For example, one college student was missing for several days. His friends
were worried and looked for him everywhere but couldn’t find him. They called the police. The police found the student in the computer lab:he was surfing the Internet--for seven days straight.
A study shows that about six to ten percent of Internet users become addicted. The teenagers spend more time on the Internet than with friends and family. That’s why some experts worry most about young people.
Is “surfing the Internet” a hobby or all addiction for you? You may have a problem if you have
one of the following symptoms(症状):
★You go out with your friends less and less.
★You can’t wait to get online again.
★You’ve decided to spend a short time online, but then you spend several hours.
★You do not go to important family events or you do not do school projects because you like to spend hours on the Internet.
What is the solution? Some experts suggest that people set strict limits on their time for Internet use. You have to learn to control it, or the Internet would control you.
96. According to experts, how many hours does an Internet addict spend online every week?

Life is filled with regrets(遗憾). Anyone around you will have no difficulty in telling his regrets. As we get older, we look back and wish that we had made better choices. What can we do to avoid future regrets?
Make better plans
If you start to do something, you need to make a plan before doing it. The earlier, the better. You will know what comes first and what comes last. You’ll also know what you should do and what you shouldn’t do. If changes happen, you can have more time to deal with them.
Live a more active life
You can go around more often. More outdoor activities can keep you relaxed and active. You also need to be kind. “Thank you”can bring a smile to someone’s face. Learn to say“sorry”and don’t be angry with others.
Find the right friend
A friend may make your life and he or she can break your life as well. So you have to think twice when you choose a friend. Good friends will always better your ideas.
When you get into trouble, ask friends for help. That little help may get you good results.
Never fear failure
Everybody fails. Even the greatest person failed. We should not fear failure, because failure is not the end of the road. We must take failure as a chance to learn and improve ourselves.
Life is good. We don’t have to live in our past, but we do hope that we can plan better, live better, and work better when we have the chance to do so.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the creators of Google, want to change your world. Their goal is to make a search engine that always gives you the right information. \"It's a huge goal, Page says, and it's a long way off. \"But Page and Brin are ready for it.
\"Imagine if you had a librarian who had the knowledge of Google but could also answer immediately with that knowledge,\" says Page. \"That would really change the world.\"
Both Page and Brin come from math and computer science backgrounds. Page's father and mother were both computer scientists. So Page's love for computers started early. He remembers surprising his teachers when he turned in a typed homework paper in primary school.
Brin's father was a math teacher and Brin's parents moved to the U.S. from Russia in 1979. Brin says they moved to the U.S. to have more chances. Judging from their son's success, their move certainly was a great decision!
Page and Brin were students at Stanford University when they first had the idea of creating their now-famous Google search engine. They began the project in Page's dorm room(宿舍). Brin says he knew Google would be great when he
found that he used it all the time.
After collecting money from friends and family, they put Google on the market in 1998. At first, they did 10,000 searches daily. Today they do over 200 million searches─more than 50 percent of all Internet searches.
Both men have surprisingly simple lifestyles. They don't live in large houses or own expensive cars. Page and Brin also work very hard. They say that setting up a restaurant at their company was one of their best ideas. Why? Because they work such long hours that they end up
eating most of their meals there! Page and Brin strongly believe that search engines can greatly
improve people's lives.

Happiness is a feeling that lights up your eyes, makes your steps light and makes you want to sing
for no reason. Everyone wants to be happy. But sometimes, a guest comes in without invitation.
It’s unhappiness. Don’t let it get you down. Send it away.
When you are happy, the world feels like a better place. As the saying goes: When you smile,
the world smiles with you; when you cry, you cry alone. Wearing a smile makes you more
charming(迷人的)and helps you to win lots of friends. A good mood(心情)always gives you
hope, which makes trouble and problems easier to handle.
No matter how happy you are, it’s normal to feel angry, sad or gloomy once in a while. . We can’t change the way life is, but we can do our best to change a bad situation into a good one. To help us do this, it’s good to know some of the factors(因素)that influence happiness.
One of the biggest factors is social relationships. People who are close to family and friends are happier than people who don’t have those relationships. Talking and sharing is a good way to relax and build confidence. Knowing someone is there for you will make you braver and more outgoing.
Another factor is work or school. If you enjoy school, even if you have lots of homework or extra classes, you will feel that your school life is meaningful and happy. But if you hate school, your negative attitude(消极的态度)may cause you to feel bored and upset that you hate to do so much work.
A third factor is your attitude towards life. How do you feel if you fail in an exam? Maybe you think it’s unfair because you always study and should have got a good mark. You can’t stop blaming(责备)yourself. Or, maybe you accept it. You go through the paper carefully, find out why you made stupid mistakes, and tell yourself, “Take it easy! I’ll do better next time!” Your attitude makes a big difference.
Do you smile a lot or wear a long face most of the time?
96.What is happiness?

The way we spend our time can be put into three “bottles”. These are the necessary tasks bottle, the voluntary tasks bottle and the happiness bottle.
Every day, we spend time filling the necessary tasks bottle. We fill this bottle with
useful things, like making money, doing housework, buying food and paying bills. We then fill another bottle with voluntary tasks. These are things that we do
for others, but we may not enjoy them. This bottle is filled with tasks like taking children to activities and cooking family meals. Those bottles are very important. If we don’t fill them each day, our family won’t run properly.
However, we often forget to fill the third bottle --- the happiness bottle. This is the bottle that we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your happiness bottle sometimes empty at the end of the day? We are busy doing all the necessary and voluntary tasks. That is why we forget to fill the happiness bottle.
We should try to fill our happiness bottle. Most days, I fill mine by going to the dancing class. I always leave the class happier than when I entered. And also playing music is another way that I fill my happiness bottle. This week, I was happy to take part in an orchestra (管弦乐队) practice at my church. A small group of us met to practice Christmas music. It was a time of fun, friendship and music making. At the end of the evening, my happiness bottle was full.
Then think about how your time is spent. Try to find ways to achieve a balance. At the end of the day, hopefully we’ve done all we can to make sure that our happiness bottle is filled.
96. How many kinds of bottles are mentioned in this passage?
